Waves Audio and Mastering.com are offering the Waves One Knob Driver plugin as a FREE download until August 5th at 1PM PDT.
Waves One Knob Driver is a distortion and saturation effect that can be used on anything, from electric guitars to synths and drums that lack a bit of character.
Whether or not you’re a fan of single knob plugins, there’s no denying that they’re fantastic at speeding up one’s mixing workflow, as long as you like how the plugin sounds.
One example of a one-knob saturation plugin that’s immensely popular (and also freeware) is Softube’s deceptively simple-looking Saturation Knob.
Yes, there’s only one main knob, but you also get a couple of saturation modes, and the plugin’s excellent sound made it a saturation favorite of many producers (myself included). And since we’re talking about saturation, let’s not forget BPB’s very own BPB Saturator, which will soon get an update.
One Knob Driver is somewhat similar to Saturation Knob, but it doesn’t offer multiple modes. Instead, the plugin’s main knob acts as a macro control that affects both the intensity and character of the applied saturation as you push it toward higher values.
Here’s how Waves Audio describes it:
“There’s a lot going on behind this deceptively simple knob. Turn it up, and distortion goes from nothing, to 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion, and finally to heavy 3rd harmonic distortion. Meanwhile, EQ tracks the crunch to boost just the right frequencies at the right settings.”
So, we start at zero, obviously, but turning the knob clockwise doesn’t simply apply more distortion. Instead, as you increase its value, it adds more harmonics, adjusts the EQ, and boosts specific frequencies to get a more exciting sound on the output.
Waves Audio also writes:
“OneKnob Driver is like having several guitar overdrive pedals, but with one knob across all their overdrive characteristics. And as many have discovered—overdrive is definitely not only for guitars.”
I completely agree that overdrive is not only reserved for guitars, especially when you have something that offers a variety of flavors like One Knob Driver. I’ve used it and similar plugins with great success on synths, drums, and bass to make them sound more interesting and cut through the mix when needed.
Waves One Knob Driver typically costs $49 (currently on sale for $29) but you can get it for free for a limited time. The plugin is compatible with VST, AU, and AAX plugin hosts on Windows and macOS.
