Beyerdynamic has released Virtual Studio, a free studio monitor simulation tool for people who mix their tracks with headphones.
The plug-in virtually simulates real speaker systems (such as stereo or 5.1) in various environments (recording studio, concert halls, etc.) on your headphones.
Virtual Studio is available for free download via Beyerdynamic (19.2MB download size, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU plugin format for Windows & Mac).
The plugin was developed in cooperation with ITA Aachen (Institute of Technical Acoustics), Bauer Studios Ludwigsburg and HOFA Plugins, who are known for some nice freeware metering plugins. Virtual Studio meant to create a virtual studio space, emulating several different speaker setups and rooms.
I still haven’t tested the plugin myself, but judging by some of the comments on KVR Audio, it works better as a room reverb plugin than a mixing utility. I’ll test it myself this weekend, though.
