Voxengo has released v2.0 of Boogex, a free virtual guitar amplifier and cabinet simulator in VST/VST3/AU plugin formats for Windows and Mac OS based digital audio workstations and plugin hosts.
This plugin is an old favorite of mine. It’s actually the first cabinet IR loader I’ve ever installed and it used to be my go-to guitar amp simulator for years. I’ve switched to other freeware plugins since then (the world of virtual guitar amplifiers was changed forever when guys like LePou and Ignite Amps stepped on the scene), but I still use Boogex as a handy virtual amp from time to time. So, what’s new in the latest version of Boogex which is now updated after all these years?

First of all, the plugin features a completely overhauled GUI, including all the good stuff which we’ve seen in more recent plugins by Voxengo. The plugin now comes with a built-in preset manager, undo/redo functionality, custom colors for the GUI and various other minor interface improvements. It really is a joy to use and Voxengo are well known for making good functional interfaces, completely free of any unnecessary bloat.
But that’s not all. The new version of Boogex also includes an improved amplification algorithm with several new processing modes. The developer Aleksey Vaneev describes the new algorithm as “a different, more complex, distortion algorithm” and adds that “it may not be possible to get the same sounds as before”. So if you’ve used the old version of Boogex on some of your current projects, you definitely shouldn’t uninstall it in favor of the new version. The safest bet is to keep both installed on your machine until you transfer your projects to the new version of the plugin.
All of the comments I’ve seen so far about the new version of Boogex are positive. I’m quite eager to test it in some of my new guitar based projects. The cool thing about this plugin has always been the fact that it offers tons of flexibility, producing great clean tones as well as decent sounding high gain sounds. It just might become my new go-to amp simulator once again!

onNever tried old Boogex, this new version looks pretty cool to me. Nice parametric EQ, lot of AMP models, great reverb unit, definitely will use this in the future, many thanks to Aleksey !
