Baby Audio’s Super VHS lo-fi multi-effect plugin is on sale at Plugin Boutique for $10 until July 26.

Super VHS is still one of the easiest-to-use lo-fi VHS-style plugins out there. It is great for adding some of that 80s vintage vibe to your music, and basically just works on anything from lo-fi and synthwave to modern pop and beyond.
I love it on synths, especially when a sound is too static and needs a bit of wobble, haze, or tape-style softness. I also love it on electronic basslines as a subtle lo-fi effect, where just a little saturation and movement can make the part feel more alive.
The main thing I like about Super VHS, though, is how little effort it takes. You really do not need more than a few knob movements to get great lo-fi sounds out of it, and that is probably why the plugin has stayed so popular for so long.
The interface has eight main controls, with six one-knob effects doing most of the sound shaping.
STATIC adds synthesized hum and noise, HEAT provides tape-style saturation, SHAPE reduces the sample rate, MAGIC adds a darker Juno-style chorus, DRIFT introduces pitch and time fluctuation, and WASH adds a grainy digital hall reverb.
There are also Mix and Output controls, plus hidden processing that includes EQ attenuation, bit-crushing, and limiting.
Baby Audio designed Super VHS around the idea of sending clean sounds back through a worn-out VHS tape from the 1980s. That is obviously a very specific flavor, not something you’d put on the master bus in most cases, but it works on more than just synthwave material.
If used gently, Super VHS can add a bit of texture to synths, samples, guitars, drums, vocals, and keys. That said, if you push it harder, it gets much more unstable, with more obvious pitch drift, grit, chorus movement, and washed-out reverb.
Baby Audio notes that Super VHS is not designed around preset browsing. Instead, each control has multiple parameters working under the hood, so the same knob settings can react differently depending on the source material.
That is also a good reminder that a little goes a long way. Super VHS can sound great on some sources and prove to be a bit too much on others if you push every effect too far at once. So, my recommendation is to start slow and A/B test it a few times just to be sure. With some experience, you’ll be able to dial it in within seconds.
Super VHS is available for macOS and Windows in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats on Mac, and VST, VST3, and AAX formats on Windows. It requires an internet connection for authorization.
