BurghRecords has announced the release of PhatNoise Phazer, a freeware phaser virtual effect in VST plugin format for Windows-based digital audio workstations.
This is the fourth freeware plugin coming from BurghRecords, following the release of PhatNoise ModFilter, Simple Delay, and LoFi Bass Filter. The company seems to be focused on developing relatively simple virtual effects which are optimized for performing a very specific task. Their VST plugins work on Windows only, but support both 32-bit and 64-bit host applications.
PhatNoise Phazer is a rather straightforward phaser effect with only five control parameters. The users can adjust the phaser’s depth and rate (non-syncable), as well as a parameter labeled “increase” which, I’m guessing, controls the feedback amount. The two knobs on the left are used to select the waveform shape and phase. These two are rather hard to control, especially the phase knob which should probably be implemented as a switch instead of a knob because it only has two values. The two text fields which display the selected waveform and phase values can actually be used for typing in the desired value. Typing “sine” will activate the sine wave shape. This is quite odd, but it sort of solves the issue of the badly behaving knobs.
In terms of sound quality, PhatNoise Phazer performs fine. It’s not a spectacular sounding phaser, but it’s not terrible either. Still, there are many other phaser effects on the market which offer a better sound and more features for the same price (free), such as the HY-Phaser and the STA Phaser, to name a couple. One area in which PhatNoise Phazer shines is the CPU usage, so you should consider it if you’re looking for an effect which won’t negatively impact your DAW’s performance (although HY-Phaser isn’t CPU intensive, either). Still, with a couple of improvements in the UI department (especially those knobs on the left side of the GUI), this latest freebie by BurghRecords might become a good option for users who want a phaser that’s as simple and easy to use as possible.

You will need to provide a valid email address in order to download your free copy of PhatNoise Phazer. It is delivered in a surprisingly large (over 40 MB) ZIP file which contains both the EXE installers and DLL files which can be installed manually (kudos for that!). The 64-bit version of the plugin comes with a typo (the DLL file is labeled PNPhazer.x65) which will hopefully be fixed in a future update as well.
PhatNoise Phazer is available for free download via BurghRecords (47.5 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin format for Windows & Mac OS).
