I Wish is a unique “pitch freezer” type of audio effect capable of treating the incoming audio signal as a single-cycle waveform for further manipulation. To be precise, I Wish is better described as a virtual instrument than an effect, since it can receive MIDI notes and basically acts as a polyphonic Wavetable synthesizer with an audio input. The idea for creating this particular kind of plugin came from Infected Mushroom’s track called “I Wish” in which the electronic duo used a similar sound design technique for creating stutter effects.
The user interface features Pitch and Formant control knobs, along with a dedicated modulation section with the Envelope and LFO controls. Additional performance controls are located at the bottom of the UI. The workflow is rather unusual yet intuitive and easy to get used to. As soon as a MIDI note is received by the plugin, it will create a micro loop of the incoming audio signal based on the played note’s wavelength. This will effectively freeze the audio at the desired pitch, making room for a variety of stutter, glitch, and rhythmic effects.
