Sour Sync has released Bedford Rascal, a free sample pack featuring the sounds of an old Bedford van.
The sample pack contains a collection of percussive sounds, squeaky noises, and processed loops. These were all made by banging, hitting, and otherwise “mistreating” an old van. All samples are provided in WAV format and the library is compatible with any sampler plugin.
I like a sample pack that tells a story. The more I learn about how and why someone recorded a particular set of sounds, the bigger the chance I’ll want to add them to the almost unbearably large collection of samples that are collecting virtual dust on my hard drive.
Because nowadays, I barely ever download any new samples or loops. I’ve accumulated a stupidly large amount sound libraries by now and my rough estimate is that I’ve never even auditioned 95% of those samples and loops. Was I doomsday-prepping for a world without samples? Is it the sound library hoarder’s equivalent of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome)? Should we refer to it as SAS (sample acquisition syndrome)? I don’t know.
But I sure do know that I have collected enough drum machine one-shots and random audio loops to last me a lifetime.
I’ve also realized, over time, that I actually prefer using sounds that I’ve made from scratch – whether by recording them or using a synthesizer to generate them. So yes, it takes something special for a sample pack to draw my attention nowadays. And every once in a while, I’ll still run into a sample pack that draws my attention. As in this case, here’s usually some story behind it.
So, back on topic. Bedford Rascal contains a bunch of noises and hits, as well as a collection of loops. The sounds are pretty fun and they can work as percussion, effects, or simply as the ammo for creative sound design. But the cool thing about the Bedford Rascal sample pack is that it shows how many different sounds one can make from a single source. Give it a try – record some sounds in your studio and see what you can come up with.
A valid email address is required to download the Bedford Rascal sample pack. It contains 96 audio files in 24-bit WAV format.
