BABY Audio have made many great plugins over the years, including fantastic freebies like Pitch Drift and Magic Switch.
Super VHS is also a great plugin, designed to be very user-friendly for creating vintage and even lo-fi sounds.
Super VHS is a multi-effect, with 6 different effects all packed into this one plugin, with only one simple control for each.
“Heat” can add saturation to your tracks and give them some life. When cranked, though, it creates a lo-fi, distorted sound.
It’d be nice if this control had auto-gain compensation, but you can always turn down the output manually.
“Magic” is a huge chorus effect controlled by just one button. Turn it on for a characterful and wide chorus sound.
“Drift” adds pitch fluctuations, or warble that are sometimes found in old tape cassettes, vinyl records, and so on.
And if you’ve used BABY Audio’s freebies, you’ll actually be familiar with the “Magic” and “Drift” controls. Each one is available as a standalone free plugin (Magic Switch and Pitch Drift).
“Wash” seems to be a combination of effects, mainly a lush reverb but also with some added compression.
“Static” is a noise generator, but not a grating one, which I like. It has that tape noise kind of sound which you might not always get when making music “in the box.”
“Shape” is essentially a bit crusher with that sort of lo-fi sound you hear in things like old video game soundtracks, or even Casio keyboards like the SK-1 and PT-10.
Each effect can add its own flavor to your tracks, but combining them is where Super VHS can shine.
I will say that it offers very little control over the sound of each effect, but that also means that it can take away the guesswork for making Lofi sounds.
It’s nice to have a “Swiss Army knife” kind of plugin that does multiple things and is very easy to use. And for $9.99, Super VHS is a great choice.
Super VHS is available as a VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin for Windows and macOS machines. Note that you need an internet connection to authorize the plugin.
