ADSR Sounds is giving away the FRMS granular synth from Imaginando for free, so long as you make any purchase on their website.
Synths come in all shapes and sizes, but we do not often encounter a granular synth that you can get for free.
There is no minimum spending requirement, and any purchase will earn you FRMS as a bonus. ADSR Sounds currently offers many great deals, some as low as $5.
As we mentioned, this plugin is primarily a granular synth, but it goes beyond that. It has granular, FM, subtractive, and additive synthesis – all in one package.
It’s a powerful sound design tool capable of anything “from heavily-dense ambient drones to glitchy mechanical beings.”

FRMS (read: “frames”) features 4 layers, each with entirely independent controls. Each layer can be set to an oscillator or the granular engine, which has up to 20 grains per layer.
You can either use the stock sounds, drag and drop your own sounds, or even use live input using the built-in audio recorder.
In fact, Imaginando recommends you to try this sort of thing on your own and mess around with feeding found sounds into the granular engine.
Check out this creepy alien-like texture they’ve made out of a metal ruler vibrating on a desk.

On top of the oscillators and granular engines, FRMS features 8 pre-made FM modes, which make using the FM module very simple and fun.
Each layer gives you access to 4 LFOs, 2 envelopes, an arpeggiator, a filter, and a handy mod matrix.
There’s also a global filter, with delay and reverb sent to glue the sound together and add some depth to them.
FRMS gives you 4 voice polyphony as well as MPE compatibility, which can be a ton of fun to explore if your MIDI controller supports that.
Finally, as with any plugin, one of the best ways to understand it is to scroll through and dissect the presets. And speaking of, FRMS features over 150 presets to check out.
FRMS is available as a VST2, VST3, and AU plugin for Windows and macOS machines. No AAX version though, so it won’t work in Pro Tools.
