LNDF recently released the Philodendron ring buffer plugin, a free and open-source release capable of some truly wild and wacky sounds.
The plugin is a VST release for macOS and Windows.
The developer describes Philodendron as a container that keeps writing itself.
At this point, I think it’s worth heading to the product page and listening to the audio demo embedded there for a concrete example of what the plugin can do when applied to a piano part.
There’s also a manual linked on the product page, which has a labeled diagram showing how the plugin operates, which is useful for picturing exactly what happens.
The section labeled Present is held between the Write and Reference points.
You can use up to four heads to simultaneously read the Present repeatedly as it writes itself.
Alternatively, you can freeze the buffer to “freely explore the Past.”
As you can hear from the audio demo, Philodendron dramatically changes the audio signal.
It can modify the piano part in several ways, ranging from comparatively subtle modulations to experimental sounds that are completely unrecognizable as a piano part.
LNDF notes that the Philodendron’s output can get loud and suggests using a comp and/or a limiter to rein in the volume, especially if you are working with the Feedback control.
Philodendron has an unconventional user interface, with the various parameters set into layers of circles, sort of like an onion.
I have to say it’s a bit to take in visually at first, but the manual has an in-depth explanation of what each part of the interface does.
The interface includes the following controls: Read Offset, Buffer Size, Read Speed, Feedback, Ratio between the head speeds, Number of Heads, and Dry / Wet.
LNDF has made downloading Philodendron nice and easy, as you can download the macOS or Windows installers with a single click from the product page.
You can also check out the source code for Philodendron on LNDF’s GitHub.
LNDF is an indie dev based in Paris, France, and the name stands for Le Nom Des Fleurs (Flower Names).
LNDF gives some background Philodendron on the How and Why page linked on the product page, noting that the origin of the plugin came when working on the internals of Hellebore.
Hellebore is a previous free plugin release from LNDF that the dev describes as a group of feedback loops.
Just like the Philodendron, the Hellebore is capable of producing some strange and experimental sounds.
In all my time writing for BPB, I haven’t ever seen a plugin quite like this one before, so if you’re tired of meat and potatoes releases and want something very different to spark some creativity, then Philodendron could be just what the doctor ordered.
UPDATE: We noted the developer about the issues reported by BPB readers. They responded immediately and released an updated version, which solved the reported issues. You can download the plugin again from the developer’s website to test the new version. A big thank you to LNDF for listening to our community, and thank you all for posting the comments!

onIn FL Studio and Studio One the plugin does not work. FL Studio shows an error, Studio One does not see the plugin at all.

onPlugin fails to scan in Reaper for me
Mark
onSince I use Linux Reaper I have to bridge it via Wine / Yabridge, and Reaper doesn’t load it. What a pity, especially since the demo sounded astonishing.
Maybe there will be a Linux version in the future?
John B.
onUnfortunately doesn’t show up in REAPER, even after verifying the filepath and physical location of the plugin. Hopefully devs will be able to fix this as the plugin itself does seem quite unique and interesting
John B.
onto clarify, I’m using x64 REAPER in Windows 11.

onUpdate Jan 11, 2025: I removed the installed version from my system, went to the site and downloaded the new version. Following install, it is now showing up in REAPER. Looking forward to playing with it! :)

onSame issue here.
David
onAnd in Renoise as well (on win10)

onPerhaps BPB should reach out to the developer and find out why everyone seems to be having issues with this………
David
onI just did
Moon Doggy
onOr, Michael from Korea, perhaps everyone that is having trouble with the plug-in should reach out to the developer………

onProblem has already been solved. Just re_download the new version.

onWould be nice to have a version without an installer so I can choose where it goes. I have limited space on c drive to the point where I have to choose between magix and ig.
shane
onthe file is only 4mb so it’s not going to add much to your woes.. if you’re that short on space you better do something about it quick smart!
BTW someone at gearspace pointed me to this little program which has allowed me to offload a lot of c drive stuff to other drives (even vst3 files): hardlinkshell.
here is the post they made about it
gearspace.com/board/showpost.php?p=17159884&postcount=33796
my advice if you use it-always just do one thing at a time to make sure things still work.. out of quite a few dozens of big files i moved i think only one didn’t really work so i restored the file back to its spot.. worth keeping notes!

onCheck out the build from Github linked in the article.

onI can understand BPB needs new content, but I would advise to maintain quality.
This plugin seems not mature enough to deserve an article here.
I am hoping for quality over quantity in 2025 and with the plethora of plugins around this should be doable.
Also aside from reviewing new plugins it could be worth revisiting good older or lesser known plugins once in a while, with tutorials imbedded, for a more educational side, rather than just the new new new GAS thing.
Tomislav Zlatic
onHey Paramita, we absolutely care about content quality and only feature the plugins we find interesting. This plugin is quite interesting, in my opinion.
We all have different tastes – some of our readers enjoy early access to interesting new projects, while others prefer more stable plugins. It’s impossible to please everyone 100%, so we focus mainly on stable software (v1.0 and above) but feature less known and alpha/beta plugins occasionally to keep things interesting.
We reached out to the developer to let them know about the issues reported by our readers, and we hope that they will soon release an update to improve performance.
David
onI’m not really looking for tutorials here, as the internet is already saturated with them. To be honest, I’m also feeling overwhelmed by the numerous analog hardware emulations and new piano libraries.
What I think is missing is recognition for young developers who are pushing the boundaries of music production with their creative and experimental approach. They deserve to be featured on BPB, even if their production style is unconventional.
Let’s not forget that innovation often comes from the younger generation, not just the seasoned pros. I think it’s time to give them a chance to shine. And, on a related note, I think it’s time for an update to this plugin

onwut?

onSame problem as everyone else (Studio 1 v6). It’s a shame because I think it has a ton of potential for my music.

onThe Mac AU didn’t work for me either in Big Sur but did once I built from source. Linux version also works when built from source. So I assume it’s something to do with the dev’s build environment.
El°HYM
onThe Developer seems aware of the Issue and is already working on a it.
Some people also got it running with no probs, so lets just keep the good faith here. (:

onThis is epic! Thank you for sharing – favorite device in a while!
Aqua
onIt wasn’t working for me in FL Studio, but I downloaded the source code and rebuilt the VST3 on my machine and it fixed it. Might be a CPU architecture issue
El°HYM
onNew Version is up on the developers Site, which resolved the problem over here.
Try downloading again and run a fresh install

onNow it works (in FL Studio and Studio One). Thanks for the info.

onThis plugin is really cool actually. I had the same problems as others getting my DAW to recognize the plugin, but the latest version worked. Thanks to BPB for sharing this one.
