Sleepy-Time Records has recently released an updated version of dbVU, a free VU meter in VST plugin format available for Windows.

Use dBVU as the first insert in your DAW while tracking to achieve latency-free, console-style monitoring and increased headroom. Use the gain knob to adjust the level of pre-recorded audio. Double-click the gainknob to reset it back to 0dB.

Use the balance slider to adjust the stereo balance of pre-recorded audio. Double-click the slider to reset it to 0. Watch the clip LED’s! If either of these light up, digital clipping has occurred. Lower your preamp’s gain input if tracking, or use the gain knob and/or balance slider inside of dBVU while mixing to adjust your signal. The LED’s are designed to glow as you approach 0dBFS and fully light when clipping has occurred.

dBVU does not have any saturation or other types of effects other than transparent gain and balance adjustment. It is simply a metering tool.

dbVU is available for free download via Reaper Forums.

Hey thanks for featuring me on your blog!

This is really just a small personal project, but I’m glad to see people outside of REAPER are using it!

The Sleepy-Time website is pretty outdated, and unfortunately my web host has been having server problems for the past few months (I can’t even log-in!) I’m looking for a new host and I’ll be building a new website soon.

If anyone has any questions or comments or anything else, please post them at the REAPER forums for now.

Thanks again. This is really neat to be on here :)
