PatchArena has released Contact Space Kalimba, a free SFZ instrument featuring the sound of a kalimba captured with a DIY piezo microphone.
Kalimba recorded with homebrew contact microphone plus SPACE reverb! Heavy reverb usage intended for filmscore percussion and other textures.
Contact Space Kalimba is available for free download via PatchArena (56MB download size, 18 samples in 24-bit WAV format, 2-3 round robin variations per note).
I liked the sound of the instrument. The fact that it was recorded with a contact microphone gave it a stronger attack, making it sound a bit more like a music box than a kalimba. I’ve made a quick little audio demo which you can hear below (it was processed with a healthy amount of epicVerb by Variety Of Sound).
By the way, for some reason the instrument sounded a bit quirky in Zampler by Beat Magazine, so I had to use it with SFZ player. I haven’t tested Contact Space Kalimba in Alchemy Player yet.

SFZ Player by Cakewalk (Pro and Simple) can’t open *.sfz files. It only open *.sf2. I don’t know what I doing wrong but SFZ player can’t open SFZ files, it’s super weird. Please, can you help with that?
hi Lukas, are you using this one?

Killer demo!
BTW – SFZ+ only loads .sf2 files. The regular SFZ Player loads .sfz files.
Also Dimension Pro, Dimension LE, Rapture, almost all the new Cake synths can load .sfz.
There is also Alchemy, and the ARIA Player.
My guess is that Zampler couldn’t handle either the offset programming or the round robin programming…
yeah, the problem with Zampler were round robins, it played all layers at the same time.
