RiverFlux Audio has released BITLAYER, a free multiband bitcrusher for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
This is a surprisingly cool bitcrusher, but the first thing I noticed was the interface. The pixel-art knobs and chunky lettering give it a fun Game Boy vibe, but the frequency display also makes this fairly deep processor easier to understand. Great look overall.
I also don’t remember testing a multiband bitcrusher recently, so this is definitely worth a look. Most effects of this type reduce the resolution of the complete signal, whereas BITLAYER divides the spectrum into eight independently processed layers.
Each layer gets its own bit-depth reduction, sample-rate reduction, and jitter controls. You can adjust its gain, change the order of the three degradation stages, or bypass, solo, and mute individual layers from the main display.
This setup gives you a lot of flexibility for messing with bitcrushing on specific parts of a signal. For example, it lets you crush the top of a drum loop without turning its kick into a digital hot mess, roughen the midrange of a bass, or apply different amounts of degradation across a synth pad.
BITLAYER can also distinguish between different parts of the source. Normal processes everything, Tonal focuses on sustained content, and Transient targets sharper attacks. That is pretty useful when you want to dirty a drum’s initial hit while leaving its body clearer, or process the sustain without flattening the attack.
Per-layer mid/side routing lets you apply the effect to the center, sides, or complete stereo signal. The dry/wet control and individual processor mix controls provide additional options for blending the degraded sound with the original.
The plugin offers two processing engines. Mixing mode prioritizes more precise isolation between frequency layers, while Low Latency mode runs without added latency for live playing and recording.
RiverFlux also included 88 factory presets covering drums, bass, synths, vocals, buses, and more. And they’re actually pretty useful starting points because this thing has a lot more sound-design potential than a conventional two-knob crusher.

Windows and Linux users receive VST3 and CLAP versions. The macOS package adds Audio Unit support and is compatible with Intel and Apple Silicon computers.
