On Friday Newfangled Audio launched the Obliterate Distortion Filter, which is available for free permanently.
The digital distortion filter is a 64-bit-only release for macOS (AAX, AU, VST, VST3) and Windows (AAX, VST, VST3).
If you like distortions capable of total sound destruction, then Obliterate will be right up your alley.
Newfangled Audio promises that the plugin will destroy your audio and make your song angry. It even has the impressive ability to make your listeners angry, which makes it peas in a pod with Lars Ulrich’s snare sound on St. Anger.
The dev claims that the plugin started life as a filter, but thanks to an unfixed bug, it eventually morphed into a “new form of resonant distortion.”
So if you’re like me, you’re probably curious at this point to hear what Obliterate can do.
Luckily for us, Newfangled Audio hosts audio demos of 808 drums, bass, and coarse vocals in a dry and obliterated form on the product page.
Just as promised, after being treated by Obliterate, the audio sounds suitably disgusting.
When I heard the distorted bass tone, it instantly brought to mind Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral.
The other treated instrument sounds are even more extreme than that.
Obliterate would definitely be right at home for industrial, noise and other forms of experimental music, and soundtracks for very disturbing movies and games.
The dev has also produced an intro YouTube video, which showcases the plugin on some additional sources and also gives somewhat of a view of the interface in action.
Newfangled Audio offers two destruction algorithms for Obliterate, which are called Too Much and Too Most, because, of course, they are.
The two resonant multi-mode filters are “morphable” from Lowpass, Bandpass, Allpass, and Notch.
Newfangled Audio has taken a no-frills approach to the download process, and you can download the unzipped installer files in one click straight from the product page.
The release of Obliterate is part of Newfangled Audio’s Black Friday promo, which has seen its other plugin releases and bundles reduced in the range of 50% to 60% off.
Newfangled Audio also offers another freebie in the form of the Pendulate textural mono synth, which is based on chaos theory.
I have to give it to ‘em; Newfangled Audio certainly comes up with some spicy ideas for plugins.

onThis thing sounds super cool, just what I had been seeking for an industrial project.
Bonus points for not requiring a login, email or authorization to install it.

onThis thing sure does sound extreme and that is putting it mildly.
