Acustica, who have created numerous freebies in the past, just released a free synth called THING TH2.
Exclusive “Christmas gifts” from Acustica are nothing new, and this year, they’ve got a versatile synth to offer, which is derived from another one of their synths, THING-8.
THING-8 is Acustica’s emulation of the Roland Jupiter 8, a classic synth from the 80s used all over records from Calvin Harris, Prince, deadmau5 and many more.
While THING-8 has a ton of features and sounds, it’s quite pricey at €229. THING TH2 on the other hand, delivers the sound of THING-8 for absolutely free – in a “new and compact format”.
THING TH2 can be both monophonic and polyphonic to suit different needs. And it comes with over 120 presets “created by industry professionals.”
The presets do sound great based on the above user demo, they have a lot of character and analogue warmth. Some remind me of the classic Blade Runner and the like.
At the heart of this plugin is the VCO (or oscillator, if you will) which can be set to either square, sine, triangle, or what looks like another rectangular shape.
There’s also a sub-oscillator to add some “oomph” to the sound, which you can set to either a square or sine wave.
You can then sculpt the sound with the filter (VCF), which features key tracking, 6 versatile filter types, and also a hi-pass filter.
THING TH2 offers a few modulation modes, including PWM (aka pulse width modulation), an LFO, and an envelope.
What’s interesting to note is that the VCO and VCF envelopes seem to be controlled simultaneously, which is unlike a lot of soft synths we’ve seen.
So, as far as I understand it, you can’t dial in separate envelopes for the VCO and VCF. What you can do though, is change how much the ADSR envelope (which has 8 modes) affects each one.
Then comes the LFO, which has 6 different modes and can be applied to the oscillator, filter, and VCA, each with adjustable amounts.
The “Master” section allows you to switch between mono and poly modes, adjust the portamento time (“Gliss”), and fine-tune.
It also contains a unison control with a “Super Stereo X2” mode to add some depth to your synth sounds.
And the last thing to mention is the “Age” knob which seems to add some variations to the sound, such as pitch fluctuation and some grittiness.
THING TH2 is available as a VST3, AU, and AAX plugin for Windows and macOS.

onI mean, it’s Acustica, what did you expect?
Their plugins are coming nowhere near my computer.
Mark
oncrashes Reaper; too…
scanmine
onIt crashes Ableton Live 11 on my Intel MacBook Pro every time. Had to uninstall.
Bob
onApparently it crashes if you install using the standalone installer because it’s not activated.
It should work ok if you activate and install it through their Aquarius downloader.
ilias
onafter properly installing (ie reaper works fine) it crashes renoise on project reload

onSince the whole R2R debacle, Acustica has dropped in quality considerably and spends more time chasing anti-piracy measures than improving on their product.
Paramita
onI would be curious to hear about this story !

onYou might want to check out the following YouTube videos for a brief overview of what happened with R2R and Acustica (though I might get SPAM flagged for this reply):

onUse aquarius to activate. Wont crush at all. Very worth having synth. Even more than arturia’s.
Astra
onNuh Uh. Arturia’s stuff are better, both in CPU usage, GUI and stability. As for sound quality, both are great

onStudio One can load it but without Gui, crashes Ableton Live 12 lite. Disappointed
Gery Zenz
onVery strange! I installed it with the stand alone installer, didn’t activate anything and had no problems in Studio One 7 on a windows 10 machine.
mrg
onDid you have previously installed plugins from Acustica? It seems to need some DLLs from their framework/system that are missing from the standalone installer, or possibly misplaced. (NeAsBr01.dll being one)
Gery Zenz
onyes, i did, maybe that’s the reason why?!
Mark
on“Very strange! I installed it with the stand alone installer, didn’t activate anything and had no problems”
as I said in my previous post, it crashes Reaper upon loading, I do not even see the activation window. Well what a pity, looked interesting according to the specs.

onFor me works perfectly with the app (aquarius). It doesn’t crash in Bitwig. Nice synth for bass honestly!. Very cool… Thanks Acustica and BPB.
Dee
onNice little freebie. Installed via Aquarius. Working in Bitwig and running great via a wrapper on MPC 2.15 software (still no VST3 support dammit Akai! 🥴). No issues. Sounds really nice. 2 poly but light enough on cpu to run a few instances for a nice stack.
avilla
onWorking nicely in Fl studio 2024
One time the vst closed Fl. nothing more tho.
Numanoid
onIt fails to load for me in FL Studio v24.2
avilla
onthat’s odd. a brand new update was released today. you could try this.
i’m using the vst3 version as always when i installed something in aquarius
Numanoid
onI have installed over 1000 VST’s free and paid, that have loaded up in FL Studio fine.
My experience is thus that TH2 is one of very very very few that hasn’t managed to load.
Looking at the directory in Common Files, there are many “weird” files installed alongside the VST3. Why?
Seeing how many have complained about not getting it to work in various DAWs this looks like a Scrooge attempt at getting free beta testing for the Aquarius platform

onIt’s Acustica, don’t waste your time. TAL J-8 is superior, multi-platform, multi-format, stable, cheaper, has better presets, requires no loader, and isn’t bloated by 9000 layers of DRM
Numanoid
onTAL J-8 isn’t free, that is a major difference ;-)
Numanoid
onTrying to load it in Savihost VST 3, gives even more errors
The worst christmas presents are toys that don’t work :-(
Paramita
onI tried twice to like Acustica through their freebies, BUT, bloated heavy installers with high CPU use.
Definitely not for me, there are so many other better free synths out there. ZebraCM being one of my favourites, U-HE rocks.
Gery Zenz
onCPU use is surprisingly low in this case!
yambu
onStrange, Samplitude does not recognize this plugin as a VST instrument and crashes.
Mark
onTried again with the “supposedly” fixed single win-installer – still crashes on reaper. I am not willing to install a download manager for this as of now. That’s a pity.
Numanoid
onThe Win installer I first tried is v A019
Checking again now, I cannot see that any updates have been added to supersede that
