Shnolk has released Monomodule, a free and open-source Elektron Monomachine emulator for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Monomodule runs the original Monomachine DSP program instruction by instruction inside an emulated Motorola DSP56300. It covers all 22 machines across the GND, SID, SuperWave, DigiPRO, FM+, VO, and FX families, along with the filters, amplitude controls, delay, and three LFOs available on each track.
This arrives shortly after the Gearmulator MD/MM project we featured earlier this month, but the two are quite different.
Gearmulator recreates both the Machinedrum and Monomachine, including their hardware interfaces and sequencers. Monomodule focuses on the Monomachine’s sound engine and reorganizes its numerous pages into a cleaner interface that I definitely prefer for DAW use.
The download actually contains four related tools. Monomodule One provides a single Monomachine track and lets you choose any of the 22 machines. Monomodule Six combines all six tracks into a single multitimbral instance, controlled via MIDI channels 1-6, with six stereo outputs and the original routing between tracks.
Monomodule FX turns the hardware’s reverb, chorus, Dynamix processor, ring modulator, phaser, and flanger into an audio effect for other sources in your session. The selected effect is followed by the Monomachine’s filter, EQ, and delay sections.
You also get a standalone Library application for importing Monomachine SysEx backups. It can preview presets, kits, and patterns using the emulated engine, retain previous versions, and drag sounds into plugins.
Patterns can be dragged into a DAW as MIDI, with notes, lengths, swing, slides, and parameter locks translated into MIDI CC data. However, Monomodule does not recreate the hardware sequencer as an interactive plugin interface, and this is one of the main distinctions from Gearmulator.
The great news is that setup is far easier than with most firmware-based synth emulators. Monomodule requires the Monomachine OS 1.32B file, but Elektron still provides that update as a free official download. You select the extracted SYX file once after installing Monomodule; no hardware ownership or ROM dumping is required.
There are still a few differences from the original machine. Two DigiPRO modes use substitute waveforms because their Digibank data lives in the hardware’s +Drive rather than the OS file, while delay-time behavior and direct MIDI transfer to hardware are not fully implemented yet.
Monomodule 1.0 is available as VST3 and standalone software for 64-bit Windows 10 or newer and Linux. macOS 12 or newer users get AU, VST3, and standalone versions for Intel and Apple Silicon. All four components come in one download, with no account or activation required.
