WET VST has released WetChorus, a free and open-source stereo chorus and vibrato plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
The new plugin is modeled after the chorus/vibrato circuit in the Roland Jazz Chorus. Instead of treating the design as a simple delay with an LFO, the developer also modeled the original’s quirks and characteristics such as the moving clock, compander behavior, drive-dependent distortion, filtering, and low-level noise.
WetChorus keeps the controls super simple. Speed adjusts the modulation rate from a slow drift to a faster shimmer, while the Deep button switches between gentle and more pronounced delay-time movement.
The most interesting control is Mode, which continuously blends between vibrato and stereo chorus. This goes a step beyond the two-position switch on the original circuit and opens up the less familiar sounds between both settings.
If you move Mode fully toward VIB, the two modulated voices run in phase. It mainly results in centered pitch movement with no stereo width, and it remains mono-compatible. At the middle setting, the voices sit a quarter-cycle apart for a more conventional stereo chorus.
Turn the control fully toward CHORUS, and the voices move in opposite directions for the widest image. However, that extreme setting can largely cancel when summed to mono, so moving back toward VIB is the safer option when mono compatibility matters.
It is worth noting that WetChorus is a 100% wet effect. Both outputs contain modulated voices, and there is no dry signal or Mix knob. If you want to blend the chorus with the source, use your DAW’s wet/dry control or place the plugin on a parallel channel.
The developer also notes that vibrato is intentionally subtle at low Speed settings to match the original circuit’s behavior. Increase Speed and activate Deep if you want the pitch movement to become more obvious.
WET VST previously released the free WetDelay and WetReverb, followed by WetEQ and WetCompressor. Like those plugins, WetChorus is built directly with the Steinberg VST3 SDK and released under the MIT license.
The download is refreshingly straightforward: click the button on the product page to get the ZIP file, with no account, newsletter signup, checkout, or activation. Installation is manual, so copy the plugin to the appropriate folder and rescan it in your DAW.
WetChorus is available in VST3 format for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus AU for macOS. The Mac builds are signed and notarized, and the interface can be resized to 75%, 100%, or 125%.
WET VST has also released WetWeld, a €15 mastering processor with input gain, filtering, broad tone controls, clipping, stereo width, and output metering. It is a paid one-time download with offline activation, while WetChorus and the developer’s other freeware plugins remain free.
