SonicXTC has released Ring Modulator 101, a freeware ring modulation effect (with several add-ons) in VST plugin format for Windows.

The freeware Ring Modulator 101 is a re-creation of a classic effects chain featuring a vintage ring modulator. However, unless you are handy with a soldering iron, have access to an old transistor ring modulator, an old dual channel tube amp, an old tube echo unit, a 2-pole ladder filter, and an old chorus/flanger pedal, you will not have much luck capturing the tone of the Ring Modulator 101.

Ring Modulator 101 is available for free download via SonicXTC (5.41 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows, made with FlowStone).

This freeware ring modulator effect also features chorus and flanger modules, a spring reverb effect, as well as a built-in tube preamp simulator. A 2-pole LP filter is also included for controlling the harmonics generated by the plugin. Ring Modulator 101 comes with 32 factory presets and supports MIDI automation.

While the GUI could be improved a bit, the plugin itself offers more than enough functionality for a simple ring modulation effect. The basic ring mod controls are there, with some useful added effects to further sculpt the sound on the output. While I definitely prefer simpler plugins which are optimized for doing one type of effect only (this often leads to a reduced CPU hit and faster workflow), sometime users find it useful to have added functionality inside the plugin.
