Developer ukdf has released GrainCharlie, a free granular synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows.
The developer, who also releases music as uknowdatfeel, created GrainCharlie after spending around a year looking for an affordable granular synth without unnecessary complexity.
Granular synthesis can be intimidating at first, so the idea behind GrainCharlie is to provide the essential controls in an instrument that you can open and use without spending too much time reading the docs.
The workflow begins by loading your own sample and choosing one of three granular playback modes.
Melody is the standard option. GrainCharlie breaks the sample into grains, and the pitch of each grain follows the MIDI notes you play.
Slice divides the source into individual sections that can be triggered separately, much like a traditional sampler, while retaining access to the granular controls. Slice Melody combines both approaches, letting you play the slices separately while their pitch also follows incoming MIDI notes.
That third mode is the coolest part of GrainCharlie. It lets you quickly turn a recording into playable melodic material without losing all of those unpredictable textures that make granular synthesis fun.
The Unison setting layers multiple voices and adds Glide for smooth transitions between notes. Alternatively, you can use the Polyphonic mode, which supports up to eight simultaneous notes.
Length controls the duration of each grain, while Grains sets how many are generated. Both parameters can synchronize to the host tempo.
Position selects the starting location in the sample, and Spray expands the area around that point from which new grains can be created. Jitter introduces random parameter deviation, Density fills out the granular texture, and Reverse determines how often grains play backward.
You can transpose the output from -36 to +36 semitones, place it in the stereo field with Pan, and randomize the position of individual grains using Pan Spread. Attack and Release provide basic amplitude shaping.
We’ve seen several interesting granular freebies this year. Dumumub’s Orbit takes a more experimental approach, while FRCTL’s GRN Lite simplifies granular processing to two main knobs. GrainCharlie sits somewhere between those two, and I think it’s a solid starting point if you’re new to granular synths.
GrainCharlie v1.0 is available through Gumroad as a pay-what-you-want download. You can enter $0 as the price to get it for free or pay more to support the dev. The page provides a Windows installer alongside manual-install VST3 packages for macOS and Windows.
The plugin requires 64-bit Windows 10 or later with an Intel or AMD processor, or macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon. Both platforms require 4 GB of RAM, and VST3 is the only supported plugin format.
