Jera Cravo has released Vadou Free, a free collection of brass snare samples picked from a forthcoming commercial snare one shot sample collection.
This recording is RAW! There is no EQ or compression. In my point of view, I rather be able to sculpt the sound the way that I want than receive a baked version of the sample, that will make the instrument sound pretty much the same as everyone’s else using the same samples…
Vadou Free is available for free download via Jera Cravo’s website (2.74 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 11 audio samples in 24-bit WAV format, 1 instrument mapping in TCI file format for Trigger by Slate Digital).
The sample pack features a small collection of sounds captured from a 14″ x 6.5″ brass snare. The sampled snare was built by Vadou Drums, a manufacturer of custom acoustic drums from Quebec, Canada. The sounds were recorded with a pair of Shure SM7 and Shure Beta 57 microphones.
The freebie pack which is featured in this article contains only a small set of samples which were taken from the full commercial pack which is due to be released soon. The freebie pack contains 11 samples, covering 3 velocity layers and several round robin variations of the same snare hit. The good thing is that the download doesn’t require any form of registration, so you can download these sounds pretty quickly and check whether you’d like to add them to your drum sample library or not.
I personally love downloading sounds like these, because it’s great to have a nice selection of live acoustic snares for layering on top of other acoustic or even electronic drum sounds. The samples in the Vadou Free sample pack sound pretty good and while there are only 3 velocity layers available, this is more than enough for layering on top of drum loops or recorded snare tracks which lack punch or definition.
