Casual Game Sounds is a neat collection of 50 freebie one shot sound effects designed for use in video games, released by Dustyroom.
The pack contains 50 individual samples in 24-bit WAV format, taking up around 10 MB of hard drive space when extracted. The samples are released under the CC Zero license (no rights reserved), which means that the sounds can be processed, re-sampled and re-used in any way you like. Pretty cool!
Dustyroom is actually a small video game development studio based Ukraine and they build video games for mobile and web platforms. The sounds included in the Casual Game Sounds sample pack were built from scratch, following the same techniques and workflow which these guys use when creating sounds for their commercially released video games.
The included samples cover a wide range of video game sound effects such as hits, jump sounds, tile removal sounds, short melodic sequences for bonuses and power-ups, etc. I was expecting to hear some classic 8-bit style sounds inside the pack, but most of these sounds are actually organic by nature, which is pretty cool. We’ve already had some great 8-bit style sample packs which were released as freebies (I’ll link to some of my favorites below), so this collection offers a nice alternative to those classic chiptune SFX packs.
Apart from the obvious usage in video games, I think that these sounds could be quite handy for use as sound effects in video projects. They can also be used in music production, since the pack contains some lovely percussive hits and short melodies which are almost begging to be re-sampled and/or sequenced into riffs.
So, this freebie is definitely a recommended download for anyone seeking a fresh set of video game style sounds for use in music, video production or video game development. Perhaps the only flaw of this free sample pack is that the file names are quite generic, so you’ll need to go manually through all the sounds in order to pick the ones you’d need for your project.
