Clean audio is fine, but sometimes you need some grunge. If you’re feeling a little light in the wallet since it’s the first of the month, then fret not because the fine folks at Plugin Boutique have your back!
Dirty Tape is Plugin Boutique’s freebie for the month of June, and I’ve greatly enjoyed this plugin since its free debut some months ago.
Dirty Tape is far removed from the gentler sensibilities of its older sibling, Tape. You’ll find grunge, dirt, and very noticeable bumps in your audio material when it is in active use.
Two large knobs power the actual sound quality of Dirty Tape. The drive button introduces harmonic distortion, with higher values mangling the signal in a delightful way.
The dirt knob introduces all those wonderful little analog imperfections and flaws. Therefore, you can introduce more flutter, dropouts, saturation, and roll off the highs in one elegant knob sweep.
Dirty Tape is very much a one-trick pony, but it is quite a nice trick.
The dirt knob at lower volumes suits drums just fine, taming the more aggressive cymbal transients, as you might expect. With the knob at noon, you’re fast approaching lo-fi hip-hop territory.
And finally, with the knob fully maxed, you’ve entered into the era of Warp Records circa 2004.
Dirty Tape has been a staple for some of my own sonic explorations and comes with the usual pedigree you’d expect from Softube. One of the most common complaints I hear in regard to Softube is the overall price of their plugins, but free is hard to beat.
As with all Plugin Boutique giveaways, you must purchase something to snag Softube’s Dirty Tape. Thankfully, you don’t need to spend much, especially if you have any credit left over.
Dirty Tape is available for Windows and Mac computers. Supported plugin formats are VST, VST3, AU, and AAX. It is compatible with Intel and M1 Macs.
