There is something special about a good phaser. As a whole, phasers are one of those effects I haven’t had much luck finding a suitable plugin for over the years.
Generally, I lean on guitar pedals to get that sound without needing a rackmount piece of gear.
MoogerFooger MF-103S is probably my favorite phaser in software form, and you can snag it for $9.99 over at Plugin Boutique for a limited time.
The Moogerfooger pedals are wonderful pieces of gear, but you’ll be spending a handsome sum to incorporate them into a hardware setup.
Now, I can’t speak of the authenticity of the sound of the MF-103S versus its hardware forebear. However, as a software phaser, it is hard to top. The overall tone of this plugin is warm, syrupy, and begging for supersaws and anything else to get chucked into it.
If you’ve got other members of the Moogerfooger ecosystem, you can readily route things like LFO information to modulation points on MF-103S. If you happened to snag Mariana on sale, you get access to a stellar phaser and a modulation source for adding some intrigue to your synth bass patches.
Controls are kept fairly simple like the best pedals generally are. You’ve got an LFO amount and rat, along with selections on the rate limits. If needed, you can readily spur this into audio rate modulation, which gets suitably hectic.
The phaser itself has a sweep and resonance control. From there, you have the option of how many stages you want the phaser’s all-pass filters to have. I find the 6-stage to be the most pleasing to my ears, but the 12-stage does sound phenomenal.
MF-103S makes an excellent companion piece to the Delay and MuRF, especially if you’re making left-field electronic music.
For ten bucks, it’s a no-brainer. The latest updates from Moog have brought a resizable interface and the removal of iLok.
