Developer Fors, which recently released Sala, the nice-sounding reverb with a slick and minimal interface, is now back with a virtual instrument called Pivot Lite.
The plugin is the smaller sibling of Pivot, and it is a two-operator FM synth with a morphable filter, distortion and stereo widener functionality.

Similar to Sala, Pivot Lite has an aesthetically pleasing and minimal interface. Some might find the symbol parameters somewhat cryptic, which is why Fors has provided a comprehensive manual that offers full clarity along with handy insights for those who like diving into the nitty-gritty details.
Pivot Lite is technically a synthesiser utilising phase modulation. The top operator (OP2) modulates the bottom carrier (OP1) to create a slew of different sounds. The resulting sound is then sent to a 4-pole morphable filter.
Ratio controls the frequency multiplication of each operator to create interesting patterns in the harmonic overtone series. Try automating this to create interesting timbral movement.
Waveform Display shows the resulting waveform, while the small arrow button controls whether the phase will be reset on every note-on. Turn it on for a consistent sound at every MIDI input, or turn it off for more organic unpredictability. The circular dial (active with “phase sync” on) can improve transient response and create even more complex waveshapes.
Level and Feedback controls the amplitude of the modulators (OP2) being sent out and back into itself. Level controls the modulator output while feedback controls how much is sent back in. The waveforms are sharper at a lower value and turn increasingly towards noise with higher amounts.
Each operator has ADSR functionality. Turning up the release to the max creates an “infinite” note that lasts until the next MIDI input.
The Morphing Filter is a 4-pole state variable filter giving your sound extra complexity and character. Low-pass, band-pass and high-pass or a mix between them can be dialled in to suit your specific needs. Furthermore, the filter has key-tracking capabilities and an ADSR to modulate the cutoff frequency with the ENV parameter.
To the left of each Operator row is a domino-looking button that randomises the buttons. The last row randomises the filter controls as well. Click them and see if it comes up with something useful!
Underneath these rows, you get access to some global controls: voice control for polyphony and note behaviour and a section for width and distortion effects. If it feels overwhelming, try running some of the nicely tuned presets and do your additional tweaking from there.

Pivot Lite lacks some of the functionality of its bigger brother, Pivot, but it doesn’t feel restricted. Pivot Lite is a capable instrument in its own right for the neat price of exactly zero dollars.
Perfect for seasoned veterans that know what they’re looking for as well as noobs wanting to dip their toes in the FM rabbit hole. Cheers!
