SampleScience is giving away one of their rompler synth plugins, SMROM, for free for a limited time.
If you’re into old-school video game music, you should definitely stick around. SMROM faithfully emulates the SEGA Master System’s sound chip, SN76489 PSG.
Master System was, of course, one of the early SEGA consoles that gave birth to games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Phantasy Star.
Now, SampleScience’s SMROM plugin normally goes for $30, but for a limited time, you can snag it for free.
All you need to do is to use code “MASTERSYSTEM” at checkout, and that will reduce the price to zero.
SMROM has 44 different multi-sampled sounds, from arps and leads to basses and sound effects. But despite this, it uses very little RAM which is great to see.
Let’s hear some of the sounds of the plugin from this user demo:

They’ve definitely got lots of character and a charming 8-bit sound to them, which we know and love from old-school VGM.
I personally couldn’t tell you which games these sounds are from since I have never owned a Master System. But they do sound fantastic, I can tell you that.
It has charming leads like Magic Carpet and Echo Keys, fat basses like Monster Bass, and even chaotic and noisy sounds like Raging Bull and Big Trouble.
SMROM’s GUI is simple and user-friendly, which is what we come to expect from SampleScience instruments.
It gives you the patch selector, LFO controls, filters, and a really nice reverb.
To dial in the sounds, you get ADSR controls for the main samples, an added sub-oscillator, and a noise oscillator with its own amplitude ADSR.
Finally, SMROM lets you pick between polyphonic, monophonic, and legato voice modes, as well as adjusting the velocity curve.
SMROM is an AU/VST2/VST3 plugin for macOS and Windows machines. It also has a Kontakt library version, but it requires the full version of Kontakt 5 or higher.
