On Wednesday Minimal Audio launched the Wave Shifter frequency modulator at an introductory price of $29, reduced from the list price of $49.
Wave Shifter is a 64-bit exclusive macOS and Windows plugin for AAX, AU, VST2, and VST3. However, the developer did not specify the duration of the intro sale.
The plugin is also included in Minimal Audio’s $ 15-a-month All Access subscription, along with the dev’s full software inventory.
Minimal Audio describes Wave Shifter as a warped frequency modulator that can create high-tech sound effects and unique harmonic distortion.

I can see that even just moving one or two dials on Wave Shifter can create some pretty interesting effects, and once you really start tweaking things then the plugin can make some really out-there sounds.
Wave Shifter has three core modes of operation: frequency shifting, amp modulation, and ring modulation. You can control these with parameters such as tuning, stereo spread, and BPM sync.
Furthermore, the filtering and feedback functions allow users to create rich resonances and cascading spatial effects.
The plugin has internal FM and soft sync routing, which can be used to create effects usually only found on synths.
The FM feedback routing can create chaotic textures, the noise operators can add grit, and you can use any sound as a frequency mod source with the external sidechain input.
Wave Shifter’s morphing LFO allows the creation of complex harmonic movements and rhythms. The effects can be further modified with randomization, adjustable waveforms, and stereo offset.
These features are complemented with 70 presets, ranging from sci-fi sounds to harmonic distortion.
Minimal Audio produced an official intro YouTube video, but it’s just basically a list of specs turned into a video.
There is, however, at least one user demo on YouTube already showing the plugin in action and gives a good idea of what it can do.

There are also three demos on the product page, which show how synths and vocals sound dry and then treated with Wave Shifter.
The one-time $29 purchase (list price $49) gives you Wave Shifter, the factory content and two activations.
One question I have is exactly what the definition of an activation is. Minimal Audio doesn’t exactly spell that out in black and white, but the dev does provide a guide on how to deactivate plugins on the support page.
That implies that once you’ve used the first two activations, it’s possible to deactivate the plugin and use it on a third and fourth machine, and so on. This is important because two activations aren’t really all that much if they are one-time only uses.
