StereoMixer is a handy stereo re-panner plugin by 4drX for macOS and Windows. It is available to download for free now.
We’ve seen a few interesting stereo-imaging/widening plugins, like Wider 2.0 by Polyverse and Darkpalace Studio’s Caterpillar.
StereoMixer isn’t a sound design tool like Caterpillar, but it does exactly what it’s intended to do as a utility plugin. More importantly, it does its job without fuss and provides clear visual feedback from large L/R peak meters.

The user-friendly interface makes it easy to handle the most common tasks quickly. It features +/-48dB left and right gain sliders; I like that they aren’t overly sensitive and allow you to make accurate adjustments without fighting the slider to land in the right area.
If you do need more precision, there are dedicated 0dB, -1dB, and +1dB buttons for each channel.
StereoMixer’s speedy workflow comes from a set of dedicated one-click function buttons, including:
- Stereo (L/R)
- Flip (L/R)
- Stereo (L)
- Stereo (R)
- Solo (L)
- Solo (R)
- Mute
- Bypass
4drX put together a short demo of the most common uses for StereoMixer, such as converting your stereo track to mono, monitoring left and right channels, and canceling mono signals panned to the center (e.g., drums, bass).
Anyone who went through the Jamey Aebersold Play-A-Long books will get a nice dose of nostalgia from the demo video!
StereoMixer is an extremely useful tool if you’re learning new songs and want to isolate specific instruments panned left or right (or at least remove the clutter to hear what’s going on more clearly).
Similarly, using the Invert function to cancel mono signals, such as bass or drums, is a cool way to turn songs into Play-Along tracks.
You’ll have to provide an email address to receive a download link; once you do, the download is quick and easy. You don’t have to sign up for the newsletter to receive your download link if you prefer not to.
I’m running Logic Pro X version 11.0.1 with macOS Sonoma 14.5 and haven’t experienced any problems.
StereoMixer is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (11 and higher) and Windows (10 and higher).
