Developer Vitling has released Crypt, a free hyper-unison synth for macOS and Windows.
When it comes to free effects and instruments, being spoiled for choice is never a complaint, but we are lucky to have so many outstanding options available to us.
The problem (not that it’s an actual problem) with so many options is that we can easily waste time deciding on the absolute best tool for the job.
Sometimes it’s nice to see a developer take the less-is-more approach and release a product that focuses on a particular goal with a narrower reach, and that’s what we have with Crypt by Vitling.
Crypt is a free hyper-unison synth that specializes in creating epic, layered synth sounds perfect for trance, witch house, hardcore, and more.
At the heart of the synth is a supersaw/supersquare system that allows you to layer up to 64 detuned oscillators.
The minimal oscillator section has just three parameters: Unison, Spread, and Shape. The limited parameters make Crypt’s intentions clear, and you can craft a big and bold sound, shaping between supersaw and supersquare.
You can further shape the synth sound with amp and filter envelopes.
There’s no LFO, but Crypt features a filter with cutoff and resonance controls, as well as some built-in effects.
The built-in effects include Phaser, Delay, and Void.
In the Void section, you have Dirt to add some crunch and distortion to your sound, and Space, which takes your sound into the virtual void.
Although Crypt is big and bold, it’s still useful for melodic lines, especially in the classic hardcore realm. If you’re just looking to create atmosphere or texture, the one-knob distortion works very well.
Artist and developer, Vitling, created Crypt out of necessity for the project and did so with CPU efficiency in mind.
Like anything that’s hyper-focused in a particular area, when you need that sound, you’re going to love it. Crypt also features a selection of factory presets.
