Infinite Digits has released AmenBreak VST, a performance-based beat slicer and sample mangler for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a generous free version that’s well worth your time.
I appreciate it when a paid plugin comes with a free edition that isn’t crippled or constantly nagging you to upgrade, and AmenBreak VST gets this part right.
Yes, the free version is limited compared to the full edition of AmenBreak VST, but it still does a lot. You get the full beatslicing core engine in mono, and you can get serious mileage out of it without spending a cent.
AmenBreak VST is built around fast, playful manipulation of drum loops (not necessarily breaks) and other rhythmic material. It uses a multi-playhead engine that lets you retrigger slices without clicks, introduce phasing, or create delay-like effects using configurable crossfades.
The automatic slicing system did wonders during my test, with several algorithms available, and the “AUTO” mode makes quick work of chopping up samples without breaking your flow.
Two macro controls define the plugin’s character. The Amen knob handles sequencing duties, letting you switch between straight playback and randomized K-step patterns, with instant regeneration when you want something new.
The Break knob is where things get a bit crazy and experimental, adding probabilistic reverses, stutters, jumps, and time-stretch-style effects that are perfect for glitchy drum programming and live-style performance.
Another highlight is slice memory. AmenBreak VST remembers markers and settings on a per-file basis using a content hash, so when you reload a sample, everything is exactly where you left it. MIDI input is also well implemented, with MIDI learn in standalone mode and full slice triggering from your controller, making it feel more like an instrument than a utility.
The free version is available as a direct download from the developer’s website, which is another huge plus. You just click the version you need, and you’re good to go, no account required.
If you like what you hear, you can purchase a license to unlock stereo output, pitch preservation, and additional effects like decimation and tunneling. The full version is currently on sale for $19, down from the regular $29, which feels very fair if you end up using it regularly.
On a side note, the whole concept reminds me a bit of PotenzaDSP’s Amigo Sampler and the free Ami Sampler by Astriid, both of which would pair nicely with AmenBreak VST if you’re into this type of stuff.
