VZTec Drops FREE Plugin Emulation of their Fuzz Pedal

Argentinian gear manufacturer and software developer VZTec has just released the Fuzz plugin, a free emulation of its own Fuzz guitar pedal for Linux, macOS, and Windows. 

The plugin is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, in AAX, VST, AU, and LV2 formats.

I have to give props to VZTec, as the dev made it as simple as possible to download the plugin.

You can download a zipped setup file for the plugin on any OS of your choice with just a single click from the product page. No email address or any other info is required. 

VZTec describes the Fuzz plugin as a digital twin of Fuzz, their analog hardware stomp. 

The devs note that the plugin captures the analog behaviour of the original stomp. 

The Fuzz stomp is an interpretation of classic fuzz pedals and operates with silicon transistors. 

There’s a lot more going on with Fuzz’s control scheme than in most classic designs, though.

This is because Fuzz has not only Vol and Gain controls, but also Bias and Tone, as well as Voice and Oct switches. Whereas most old-school fuzz pedals had only two or three parameters across the whole design.

The Oct switch engages Octafuzz mode, which is a “frequency-doubling” circuit that pushes the gain on the upper harmonics, which is perfect for delivering cutting tones.

The Voice switch swaps out between the Face and Muff (mid-scoop tones) modes. 

So the Voice names are nods to the Arbiter Fuzz Face and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, if you were curious exactly which vintage stomps inspired VZTec’s design. 

You can further tweak the sound with Tone, allowing you to hit the sweet spot with the bass and treble frequencies.

The Bias control modulates the effect’s texture, allowing users to go from open tones to heavily gated “broken sounds”. 

So overall, there’s quite a lot of tone-shaping options, at least by the standards of a vintage-inspired fuzz pedal, so it’d suit someone who wants to get a broad range of fuzz tones in a single workflow. 

There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of demos of the Fuzz plugin on YouTube yet, with the plugin just launching this week.

However, there are plenty of demos of the Fuzz pedal, which should provide a pretty good idea of the type of sound to expect from the plugin release.
