Universal Audio has released the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection, a native plugin bundle for macOS and Windows, available as a free download for a limited time.
The UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection includes software versions of the UA 610-A and 610-B tube preamp and EQ channel strips. Both of these are based on the original hardware designs from the 1960s.
The 610 console was originally designed by Bill Putnam Sr. and was among the first mixing desks built specifically for recording. Rather than aiming for transparency, the 610 channel strips were designed as tone-shaping tools, using tube amplification and transformers throughout the signal path.
The new native plugin collection from Universal Audio recreates that full signal chain in software, including the preamp gain stages and EQ circuits.
The bundle includes two plugins. The 610-A is the simpler of the two, with a more straightforward EQ layout and broad tonal shaping controls. The 610-B adds more options for tweaking, including additional EQ points and finer control over frequency selection.
Both plugins can be used as input stages, tone shapers, or saturation tools on vocals, guitars, bass, synths, and drums.
These plugins were previously available mainly to users with Apollo interfaces, but this release makes the collection available natively. That means you can run the plugins directly in your DAW without Universal Audio hardware.
Of course, if you do have an Apollo interface, the DSP versions are also included and can be used with Unison technology for real-time tracking through the preamp models.
I like how these 610 plugins are designed to be quick to use. You can get some great-sounding tones just by adjusting the input gain and output level, with the EQ used more for shaping than corrective work.
They’re particularly suited to adding harmonics and subtle saturation early in a signal chain, before compression or other processing.
To get the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection for free, you’ll need a Universal Audio account. Once logged in, you can add the collection to your account and install it via UA Connect. The free offer is time-limited, after which the collection will return to its regular price.
The UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection runs on macOS and Windows and is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. Both native and Apollo DSP versions are included with the download.
