We all know the drill by now with DAWJunkie: we get a nice freebie, with the option to upgrade to a fully-featured big brother for just $1. Their latest freebie is LeadOff Jr, a free wavetable synth for macOS and Windows.
This time around, we’ve got LeadOff Jr., a free wavetable synth for quick, easy lead sounds.
LeadOff Jr offers a fairly watered-down wavetable synth experience, but you can pick up the fully featured LeadOff for just $1 if you want more detailed control.
What LeadOff Jr lacks in advanced controls, it makes up for in the immediacy of sound.
LeadOff Jr offers eight selectable wavetables, while the full version offers eighteen.
The freebie lets you blend two synth oscillators, each with various features.
Synth 1 is the wavetable-based synth, and features Sweep and LFO functions to add movement to your sound. You can adjust the wave position and the speed at which it sweeps through the entire wavetable.
A slow attack with the Sweep, and the LFO Intensity around 50% sounds great.
Synth 2 lets you add a standard waveform layer to the sound, with options to adjust the octave and tuning settings. Going up an octave with relatively low volume is a great way to add subtle harmonic content.
Additional features include a resonant filter, but it comes without the advanced modulation controls offered by the paid version.
You can enhance/alter the lead sound with Unison and Detune controls; the Detune control, in the right amount, takes a little harshness off and adds character.
Another way to alter the character is through the available Attack buttons.
LeadOff Jr has three of these Attack buttons (Click, Ding, and Super Saw), while the paid version has six.
The buttons are a quick and easy way to adjust the initial impact of your lead sound, and even give it a percussive attack.
Along the bottom of the GUI, you’ve got some onboard FX, including compression, distortion, pitch, phase, delay, and reverb.
The paid version provides more adjustable parameters for the available effects.
As expected, LeadOff Jr does what it’s supposed to do with minimal fuss.
It delivers nice lead sounds quickly without the need to mess around with endless features and functions. It’s not trying to be a word-beater; it’s meant to be immediately usable, and it is.
