FRCTL has released SWRL Lite, a free modulation plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
SWRL Lite combines six movement-based effects into a super clean interface with just two controls: Amount and Mix.
The idea here is simple, and I like it. You turn one knob to enhance your sound with motion, depth, and character. Then, if needed, you can adjust the balance with the Mix knob.
I’ve said many times that I’m a fan of simple plugins, especially those with minimal controls. Even when they don’t offer access to every parameter under the hood, they can either speed up your workflow (for example, DAWJunkie One Knob Dynamics) or provide inspiration (for example, Magic Dice).
SWRL Lite falls into the latter category. It feels a bit like a “magic box” effect: you turn the main knob, and something interesting happens on the other end, but you’re not 100% sure what to expect, at least in the beginning.
The Amount control drives all six built-in characters simultaneously. At lower settings, you get subtle movement and gentle enhancement.
But when you push it further, the effect becomes more pronounced and spits out an interesting mix of textures with plenty of modulation.
If things get too crazy, the Mix knob lets you blend the processed signal with the dry input, so you can dial in anything from a light touch to fully wet processing.
The six characters working behind the scenes are Drift (chorus-style pitch modulation), Wash (reverb and diffusion), Orbit (spatial movement with stereo rotation), Flutter (tremolo-style modulation), Pulse (rhythmic pumping), and Heat (harmonic saturation).
So, rather than adjusting each effect separately, SWRL Lite runs them together through a single engine, and you shape the overall intensity with a single macro-style control.
The visualizer provides some feedback as the signal moves, though it’s mostly there for eye candy. That said, it’s worth noting that the plugin runs with zero latency and minimal CPU usage.
I also liked the included automatic gain compensation because it helps keep levels consistent as you increase the Amount control.
