INTERSECT is a free open-source sample slicer plugin

INTERSECT is a free, open-source sample slicer plugin for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It has been steadily improving over the past several releases.

BPB reader bmovie suggested I give it another try in our community section (thank you!), and I have to say I am impressed with how polished it has become. If you need a solid sample slicer in your plugin collection, this one is worth checking out.

I do not use sample slicers as much as I used to, so I did not put INTERSECT through a heavy test. But loading it up and chopping through a loop brought back some good memories of the days when I was having fun with the Amen break in my DAW.

I do not even remember which slicer I used back then; perhaps it was even an old version of the Shortcircuit sampler. But that’s all ancient history by now, and producers now have plenty of amazing new software to choose from (including a new version of Shortcircuit).

INTERSECT has a nice, clean interface and is easy to get going, so if you enjoy playing around with drum breaks or other samples that work well with a slicer, it is definitely worth a try.

It loads one audio file per instance and supports WAV, OGG, AIFF, FLAC, and MP3. You can create slices manually by drawing on the waveform, chop in real time with the Lazy mode, or use the Auto Chop function to split based on transient detection or equal divisions.

Each slice is mapped to a MIDI note starting from C2 upward, so you can trigger and rearrange slices directly from your keyboard or MIDI controller.

The fun part, though, is the per-slice parameter system.

The Signal Chain bar at the bottom of the interface has Global and Slice modes. Global sets the default playback, filter, amp, and output settings for the whole sample.

Switching to Slice mode lets you override any of those parameters for individual slices, so you can give each slice its own pitch, filter cutoff, envelope, loop mode, or even reverse playback without affecting the rest.

The plugin includes three playback algorithms. Repitch links pitch and speed like a classic sampler. Stretch uses Signalsmith Stretch for independent time and pitch control with tonal and formant options. Bungee is a granular stretch mode with adjustable grain settings.

There is also a per-voice filter with LP, HP, BP, and notch modes, key tracking, drive, and its own ADSR envelope.

INTERSECT is available as VST3 and Standalone on Windows and Linux, and as VST3, AU, and Standalone on macOS. You can download ready-to-use builds from the GitHub releases page with no sign-up required, or build it from source if you prefer.

The builds are unsigned, so macOS users may need to clear quarantine flags before the plugin loads.
