MNTRA has released FLTRS-LE, a free filter plugin based on the Roland Jupiter-6 filter circuit.
FLTRS-LE is a trimmed-down version of the developer’s full FLTRS plugin, which costs $49 during the launch sale (regular price $79) and packs 37 analog circuits and experimental physics engines.
The filter we get in the freebie is called EUROPA-6, and MNTRA describes it as a full component-level reconstruction of the Jupiter-6 filter module. That includes the OTA gain stages, the SVF topology, component tolerances, and the nonlinearities that give the hardware its character.
On top of the original circuit, MNTRA added negative resonance (a notch instead of a peak), a parallel band-split path, stereo detune, and vintage aging drift.
I’m a huge sucker for filters, so this freebie is right up my alley. I love collecting them, and I know some people will say a filter is just a cutoff and some resonance, and they all do a similar job, but I disagree.
The character of a Moog ladder, a Roland filter, or something more unusual can be miles apart, which is exactly why the very first BPB freebie we released was the BPB Dirty Filter, a somewhat chaotic filter with tons of character.
The sound of EUROPA-6 is great in my book. It has that nice subtle breakdown feel where the resonance bites hard without falling apart. Also, the interface has the abstract MNTRA look that I really like. It’s a bit unusual, but it works here.
FLTRS-LE ships with the one EUROPA-6 algorithm fully unlocked and nine atelier presets to get you started. No feature limits on the circuit itself.
If you like what you hear and want to go further, the paid FLTRS adds 36 more circuits grouped into eight families, covering legendary analog filters (Juno-106, MS-20, SEM, ARP Odyssey, Polivoks, EMS VCS3, Buchla-inspired LPG, and more), spectral processors, mid/side filters, and experimental physics engines like Gravity, Magnetic, and Doppler Chaos.
You also get 300 presets, an envelope follower, a parametric EQ, and a dual-mode limiter. I haven’t tried the full plugin, and the demos on the product page are a mixed bag for me, but the overall concept looks pretty cool.
One thing to note about the checkout. You add FLTRS-LE to the cart and go through the regular checkout with your name, email, and address. Once you complete the order, you get a license key to activate the plugin.
FLTRS-LE is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
