DAWJunkie, the developer behind DT-600 Mini, Padness 2 Jr, Knobs, and many more interesting freebies, is back with another: Mini-Menace.
Mini-Menace is available in AU, VST, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
Mini-Menace is a throwback to the modern resurgence of analog synths, with all sounds sourced from the Arturia MicroBrute.
It’s easy to forget that the MicroBrute has been around (albeit discontinued and then continued in special editions, etc.) for so long.
When it was first released, well over a decade ago, Arturia’s MicroBrute became an instant classic as an affordable analog synth.
Arturia synths, certainly the smaller ones, tend to have a character that’s slightly different from the norm; they can’t do some things you’d expect, but do a lot of things you don’t expect.
The MicroBrute is no different, which makes it a good fit for DAWJunkie, as the developer tends to focus on quirkier synths.
Mini-Menace has two oscillators: the Sampler and Wavetable.
The Sampler has three variations: CrunchTime, Interrupter, and RoundSound.
The Wavetable offers five variations (Dracula, Mini Crunch, Warmer, Bass Buddy, and Whiner) with adjustable position.
In addition to the Position knob, you can apply automated movement via the Motion switch or an LFO.
These settings are the core elements of the sound, which you can shape further with the Amp Envelope, Low Pass Filter, and built-in FX.
The built-in FX include Crunch, Phaser, Delay, Reverb, and Unison.
Even the smallest addition to the Brute synth family could really growl, and Mini-Menace does that well, whether it’s aggressive leads or really dominant bass sounds.
What I like most about Mini Menace is that DAWJunkie hasn’t just focused on the MicroBrute’s aggressive character, turning it into a caricature.
The developer has captured the other side of the MicroBrute with lovely pads, plucks, and rounded bass tones. These are some of the things you might not expect from the original synth.
There’s also a collection of presets that show all of these things in action before you get into customizing your sound.
