Sketch Audio has released Lil’ Doc, a free Detroit-style compressor plugin for macOS, Windows, and iOS.
Lil’ Doc is based on the Mix Slammer module from Sketch Audio’s paid Doctor Vibe plugin. The developer describes it as a take on the vinyl compression algorithm from the Roland SP-303 sampler.
That unique “Vinyl Simulator” effect became known for its heavy compression more than for “vinyl” realism, and you’ve probably heard it in tracks from J Dilla and Madlib, among others.
I like compressors that slam and add character, especially on drums. Clean compression has its purpose, of course, but sometimes I just need something that makes a loop hit harder.
Lil’ Doc brings that kind of compression in a compact format that’s super easy to use. You get the same core DSP from Doctor Vibe, but the interface is reduced to four main controls.
Slam controls the amount of compression, and that is the main knob you will probably reach for first. You can basically apply as much as the source needs, then shape the extra character with Noise and Drive.
Noise adds Sketch Audio’s vinyl noise and crackle, while Drive adds converter-style input clipping. Grade switches between four sample grades, so you can move between cleaner and more degraded flavors with a single button.
I also like the minimalist look here. The interface is clear, with simple controls, and it’s just the type of setup I need when working on loops. I love it when you can quickly drop something on a channel and make it sound better in seconds.
Adjustable GUI colors are a nice touch, too. It is a small thing, but having a dark mode option is always cool.
Although the obvious use case is drums, Lil’ Doc should also work on guitars, samples, bass, and anything else that benefits from thick compression and a bit of sampler-style dirt. If you want more control over the full vinyl, converter, and Mix Slammer sections, Doctor Vibe is the bigger paid version.

Lil’ Doc is available in AAX, AUv2, AUv3, CLAP, and VST3 formats for macOS 11 or higher, iOS 14 or higher, and Windows 10 or higher. The desktop version requires a free Sketch Audio account, while the iOS version is available on the App Store.
