Auburn Sounds has released Psypan 2 Free Edition, a free stereo multi-effect plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
We have covered several Auburn Sounds plugins on BPB over the years, including Panagement, Lens, and Inner Pitch. Psypan 2 follows the same Free/Full model, with a very usable free version and a paid upgrade for the complete feature set.
As with all Auburn Sounds plugins, I am in love with the interface. The developer’s tools are some of the most interesting on the market in terms of visual design, and Psypan 2 continues that trend with a playful but clear layout.
Psypan 2 is based on the old GFM Psypan binaural panner from 2011, but the new version turns the same overall concept into a way more powerful stereo toolbox.
It is not just a basic pan control. It includes a bunch of goodies like binaural panning, volume-based panning, widening, doubling, Haas-style delays, chorus-style movement, directional EQ ideas, and M/S variations in the full version.
The Free Edition includes 10 pan modes. The Full Edition expands that to all 17 modes.
The main difference is that the Full Edition adds seven extra modes: P1, P2, 2-band Binaural, Doubler, M/S Haas, M/S µ-Shift, and M/S Peak Panner. The free version still gives you the core Psypan 2 concept, including the new Psy-2 binaural algorithm, standard balance-style modes, and several creative stereo tools.
Psy-2 is the new default binaural mode. Auburn Sounds says it builds on the original Psypan behavior while adding spectral shaping to make the sound feel like it moves in front of you rather than over your head, especially on headphones. Sounds very cool.
There are also clean volume-based modes for regular mix work, including pan laws like -3 dB, -4.5 dB, and -6 dB center compensation. That makes Psypan 2 useful not only for special effects, but also for more normal stereo placement and problem-solving.
The creative modes are there for a bunch of other stuff like adding density, widening a source, generating movement, shifting stereo focus, or making a track feel wetter and less static without reaching for a full reverb or chorus.
The Full Edition costs $29, but the Free Edition is the one most BPB readers should try first. It gives you enough of the plugin to understand whether Psypan 2 fits your workflow, especially if you often work with stereo movement, headphones, reverb returns, synths, or sound design.
Psypan 2 is available in CLAP, VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, LV2, and FLP plugin formats. It supports Windows 7 or newer, macOS 10.15 or newer, and Ubuntu 22.04 or newer.
