Dark Fairytale Instruments has released PIXIE, a free sample-based toy piano plugin for macOS and Windows.
With a simple instrument like this, I always wonder whether it needs to be a plugin. PIXIE could have been a regular sample library, but then you would need to load it into a separate sampler, and if it’s not mapped in advance for something like Decent Sampler or Kontakt, handle the mapping yourself.
But at the end of the day, I think packing everything into a self-contained instrument is more convenient. You simply load PIXIE in your DAW, choose a preset, and play. It does not require Kontakt, Decent Sampler, or another sample player.
PIXIE is based on an antique Schoenhut toy piano from composer Oskar Schuster’s instrument collection. It has two articulations: the piano played from its keyboard, and the exposed metal plates struck directly with a felt mallet. The Softness control blends between them.
Each note was sampled 27 times, which, if you ask me, is an unusually high number of round robins for a small toy piano instrument. Those round robins definitely help repeated notes sound more natural.
The original instrument spans two octaves, but PIXIE extends the playable range to 49 keys from B2 to B6. When both articulations are active, the Mischief control loosens their timing so the layers start slightly apart.
You can also adjust the level of the mechanical noises, reverse the samples, and, my favorite, use the Bloom control for a more atmospheric tail. I like the reverse effect too, but Bloom sounds lovely when you want to move the basic toy piano tone into ambient territory.
The interface fits the fairytale character and keeps the instrument easy to use. Also, the ten presets provided by Oskar Schuster cover a wide range of natural toy piano sounds and processed options.
PIXIE should work well for simple melodies and gentle, nostalgic music, but I love how toy pianos also have a naturally eerie quality that suits horror and darker cinematic scenes. Halloween is right around the corner, so it’s a good time to add something like this to your arsenal.
To download PIXIE, enter your email address on the developer’s website. Installation requires around 200 MB of free disk space, and the first launch requires the supplied license code. After activation, the plugin works offline.
PIXIE requires macOS 11 or later or Windows 10 or later. It is available in 64-bit VST3 format for macOS and Windows, with AU also available for Mac.
