Jesus Oyola has released Medallo Doubler, a free vocal doubler and stacker available through Patreon.
I’ve used various vocal doubling plugins in the past, and I’ve never been 100% happy with the outcome. Most of them either create only two stacked voices or leave little room for adjustment.
My first impressions of Medallo Doubler are definitely good. I like how you can really dig into the stack and fine-tune it until the four voices sit the way you want.
Each voice has independent Gain, Pan, Delay, Detune, and Formant settings. Delay reaches 100 ms, while formant shifting covers ±12 semitones with HQ Formants active.
That control over four separate voices gives you more scope than most similar plugins I’ve tried. You could really go wide with the setup, like pushing the voices outward for a wide hook, keeping them close to the center behind a lead, or using different timing and pitch offsets across the stack.
Every voice also has independent, always-on wow and flutter movement, which ensures the stack doesn’t sound like four identical static copies.
Depth and Rate further modulate the pitch, letting you move from a slow drift to a more obvious flutter or chorus effect.
The master section includes Dry/Wet, Output, and Warmth controls. Warmth applies tanh-style saturation to the doubled signal, while Center Pan brings all four voices into the middle for a tighter, mono-compatible stack.
I have one issue with the interface. Above the large pad where you drag the four voice points is a button reading “FREE BASS RESONATOR CLICK HERE.” It promotes The Bass Particle, Oyola’s free bass saturation and sub-resonator plugin that we recently covered.
I don’t think this kind of promotion adds anything to the user experience. With so many plugins available now, user experience is extremely important, and anyone who downloaded Medallo Doubler from Patreon has likely already visited the developer’s page and seen the other plugins. If they like his work, they can return and explore it.
A clickable ad near the main controls can be hit accidentally and draw attention away from the plugin itself. Medallo Doubler is good enough that it doesn’t need one. Just my two cents.
The developer says he designed Medallo Doubler for the closely layered vocal stacks heard in 2000s rap and reggaeton, but I think it has a lot of potential for other music styles, too.
This is an excellent freebie, especially if simpler vocal doublers have left you wanting more control.
The Patreon post provides separate downloads for Windows, Linux, and macOS, including a Universal Build for Mac. The macOS build is unsigned, so Gatekeeper may require you to approve it through Privacy & Security before first use.
