Boyss Sound has released Dark Designs – Cage Bonus, a free collection of SFX samples and percussive hits designed for use with Native Instruments Kontakt, sforzando by Plogue (other SFZ compatible sample players are also supported) and Beat Magazine’s free Zampler RX sampler.
The free product is based on the full version of Dark Designs: Cage (which can be grabbed for just £3.17 at Sampleism), but it’s a fully functional product in its own right and not limited in any way (apart from the reduced sample set). The free Dark Designs – Cage Bonus pack contains 126 individual percussive and SFX sounds, along with a SFZ instrument patch for sforzando, an FXB bank for Zampler RX and a NKI patch for NI Kontakt. The NI Kontakt version of the library comes with a really useful custom user interface, providing access to volume envelope parameters and a 3-band parametric equalizer, along with a set of FX amount controls for distortion, chorus, reverb, delay and tremolo.

There’s a nice selection of really spooky sounds and percussive hits in this freebie pack, including various metallic impacts, chain rattle sounds and eerie distant noises. I haven’t tested the sforzando and Zampler RX versions of the library yet, but the Kontakt version is really neat and the available on-screen controls make it very easy to tweak the samples to your liking right within the Kontakt user interface. The download pack also contains WAV versions of each sample, making the library compatible with virtually any sampler instrument and digital audio workstation out there.
To sum it up, if you’re looking for a nice collection of spooky and dark sound effects for a horror movie trailer, an industrial track or any other project that could benefit from spine chilling horror SFX, you should definitely check this one out. I’ll keep a close eye on Boyss Sound releases from now on, as I was quite pleasantly surprised by the quality and usefulness of Dark Designs – Cage Bonus.
