AZPEX Audio has released REGENT, a free clipper plugin for macOS and Windows.
I still find it fascinating how many free clippers there are. The number is probably well into the hundreds by now. You can cut through the noise with our recently updated free clipper roundup, which features 13 particularly good ones.
But still, the sheer number of free clippers out there in the wild never ceases to amaze me.
So, does REGENT do anything differently? It most definitely does not reinvent clipping, but it has a couple of interesting technical and workflow details that make it worth a look if, for whatever reason, you need another free clipper.
The control layout is pretty standard. Clip adds up to 10 dB of gain before the nonlinear stage, Style selects the clipping curve, Ceiling provides up to 24 dB of attenuation after clipping, and Mix blends the processed signal with the dry path.
Because those stages remain independent, proper level matching and parallel clipping are easier than in various one-knob clippers we’ve seen lately.
The three clipping styles are Soft, Solid, and Hard. Soft begins bending earlier and has the broadest knee, Solid stays linear longer before entering a tighter knee, and Hard uses an abrupt clamp with no transition.
Character adjusts the geometry of the Soft and Solid curves toward or away from a harder reference. Importantly, it does not add EQ, gain, or another saturation stage, and it has no effect in Hard mode.
REGENT combines first-order Antiderivative Antialiasing (ADAA) with 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x oversampling. ADAA remains active at every rate, including 1x, while higher settings run the nonlinear stage at a higher internal sample rate to further reduce aliasing.
The plugin always reports eight samples of latency, and its dry branch receives the same delay before the Mix control combines both paths, so it avoids the timing mismatch that would make parallel clipping sound phasey.
There is also a bit more visual feedback than you get from most other free clippers. REGENT includes stereo input and output peak meters, a rolling three-second short-term LUFS reading, waveform history, and a live transfer display.

Unfortunately, I had all sorts of problems getting this to run on macOS. The installer is unsigned, but regardless, it seems the VST3 version simply doesn’t work on macOS. It worked for me on Windows, though.
REGENT is available in VST3 format for Windows and macOS, with an AU version also provided for macOS.
