Karoryfer Releases Gogodze Phu Vol II Drum Kit (KVRDC18)

Karoryfer has released the freely downloadable Gogodze Phu Vol II drum kit sample library for Plogue Sforzando as their entry in KVR Developer Challenge 2018.

Gogodze Phu Vol II is Karoryfer’s second KVR Developer Challenge entry, following 2016’s Marie Ork sound library for the Alter/Ego vocal synthesizer. This time they’ve created an acoustic drum sample library for Sforzando, a freeware virtual instrument by Plogue which you’ll need to use in order to take advantage of the customized user interface. However, you can use the provided WAV samples and SFZ patches in any other compatible sampler instrument.

Karoryfer describes Gogodze Phu Vol II as an acoustic drum instrument that can sound both hi-fi and lo-fi. According to the developer, the inspiration for creating such a drum kit came from the distorted drums on Kim Jung Mi’s 1973 album “Now”. The amount of distortion and compression can be easily adjusted using the on-screen controls. Same goes for the microphone positioning, as the user can choose between several recording setups with a single click.

Despite its streamlined user interface, Gogodze Phu Vol II is a rather complex sample library on the inside. It packs 1,701 drum samples in total, adding up to over 400 MB of content in 16-bit WAV format when extracted. It features a kick, a snare, three toms, and a hi-hat with five degrees of openness. All drum kit elements were recorded with the same seven microphones and multiple round-robin takes to provide an authentic sounding virtual drum kit.

The instrument’s sonic character will fit various genres, although I think it would work best in a rock/indie type of track. This is mostly due to the fact that the snares and toms were intentionally muted while recording, resulting in short and punchy sounding drums. You can pair the library with Karoryfer’s recently released Secret Agent Guitar virtual instrument which is currently on sale for just $19 (that’s 50% OFF the $39 regular price).

You can hear the instrument in action in the YouTube video embedded above and download it from the KVR Developer Challenge page linked below. The voting phase is open until the end of September and the winners will be announced in October. While you’re here, you might also want to check out our mini-review of Dead Duck Deducktion.
