ADSR Sounds offer the Bitcrush ($19 value) plugin by Kilohearts as a free add-on with any purchase throughout July 2021.

Bitctush is a simple-looking but unusually versatile bit reduction effect by Kilohearts. It is available in VST and AU plugin formats for DAW software on Windows and macOS. Unsurprisingly, it also works as a Snapin in compatible Kilhoearts plugins (such as Multipass).

Apart from reducing the bit depth and sampling rate (the standard options available in pretty much any bitcrusher plugin on the market), Kilohearts Bitcrush lets you change the analog-to-digital conversion quality and add dithering noise. These are useful bonus features that expand the plugin’s sonic palette.

One really cool technique you can perform with Kilohearts Bitcrush is emulating the lo-fi sound of old-school 12-bit hardware samplers. This can be done with most other bitcrushers, too, but Kilohearts Bitcrush provides that added layer of realism with the ADAC controls.

Set the bit depth to 12-bit, reduce the sampling rate to your liking, then adjust the ADC Q and DAC Q knobs to a lower value. Play some drum loops (preferably hip-hop drum kits) through the signal chain for added grit and that classic old-school hip-hop sound.

Of course, you can go crazy and set the bit depth to four for ultra-distorted audio. The interesting option here is to fine-tune those heavily distorted sounds by adjusting the Dither and ADC Q parameters.

The plugin also features a mix knob, and a randomize button, leading to some exciting (albeit unpredictable) results. Another handy feature worth mentioning is the ability to resize the user interface.

Here’s how the team at Kilohearts describes the Bitcrush plugin:

“When nostalgia hits, Bitcrush can bring you back to the digital hardware of times past. The Bitcrush can be used to create distorting effects that sound like that of scraping analog radio, or inherently lo-fi sound sources, like old video games.”

Bitctush typically costs $19, but you can get it as a free add-on with any purchase this month. Visit the Summer Sale 2021 page for more info about the latest deals available at ADSR Sounds.
