Minimal Audio has announced the next phase of its flagship synth, Current, by releasing Current 2.0 with 50% off for a limited time.
To celebrate the milestone update, Minimal Audio is offering a perpetual license for Current 2.0 for $99 (usually $199).
I call it a milestone update for a couple of reasons; yes, it’s the first significant update of a flagship product, but it’s also a significant step for a product that once stood on very rocky ground.
Minimal Audio addressed the contentious subscription-only model, replacing it with the rent-to-own and perpetual license options, so that story is old news.

But pricing aside, I enjoyed Current, so I’m curious to know what you think of the synth now that the old subscription model doesn’t overshadow it.
Before Current, Minimal Audio was on a great run with effects plugins like Fuse Compressor and Morph EQ. One of the most appealing aspects of Current is that you get all of Minimal Audio’s premium effects inside the synth.
Current 2.0 includes the same effects and adds a new Wave Shifter, combining frequency shifting and ring modulation.
The new Wave Shifter includes oscillator-like controls, such as FM and soft-sync. It’s a quick and easy way to bring your sound to life and turn a Current preset or sample into something unique.
In terms of quantity, Current 2.0 has over 400 presets, over 170 wavetables, and more than 800 samples. Preset loading times are now much faster.
Along with the new Wave Shaper and increased numbers above, updates like unlimited modulator connections and up to 32 voice polyphony expand the way we craft and perform sounds from Current.
Many updates and new features focus on enhancing the workflow and overall user experience. Browsing is easier using the arrow keys, and you can now arrange Stream search results by release date, alphabetically, or shuffled.
A new Stream Pack view allows you to browse the latest expansion packs.
One of the new features that focuses on enhancing the user experience for all experience levels is the Play View. Play View features a dual XY pad that makes it easier to interact with preset parameters.
Play View isn’t the only new visual; there’s a new Mixer panel, a mod matrix popup with additional controls, and a wavetable spectrum display mode with real-time visual feedback.
Current 2.0 builds on what was already a very good synth by adding a little more power and making it easier to get around.
The new features, improvements, and previous pricing amendments should convince anyone still on the fence to give it a go!
