Earlier this week, Analog Obsession released DrGate, a gate plugin made for drums.
DrGate is a plugin for macOS (VST3, AU, AAX) and Windows (VST3, AAX).
Analog Obsession has kept this bad boy nice and simple with four parameters: Gate, Hold, Filter, and Blend.
Gate sets the threshold for the gate, Hold is a regular hold function but offers program-dependent release (10 ms to 1000 ms), and Blend mixes the dry and wet signals.
Filter is a low pass filter in “reverse”, starting from 5 Hz up to 500 Hz. This allows you to mix the gated signal with the filtered (removed) signal to smooth out the former.
In addition to these four controls, you have the big red Bypass button in the center and the ability to resize the interface from 50% to 200% via the handle in the bottom right corner.
Analog Obsession also provided some handy tips on how to get the most out of the good doctor.
The dev suggests starting by gating your source with the Gate control and then using Hold to fine-tune for transients, allowing you to get a squeaky-clean gate sound.
You can also use Filter to get an even smoother gate and resonance/tail from your source by filtering the leftover signal and gated signal tail.
Together, these three controls will allow you to dial in a really clean and controlled drum sound.
Although Analog Obsession markets DrGate as a drum plugin, the dev does note that it can do a bang-up job on other sources such as bass, guitar, vocals, and more.
Analog Obsession has provided us with a nice and easy download process by placing the download links directly on the product page.
From the page, you can download any of the following with a single click: macOS installer, Windows installer, and Windows VST3 and AAX files in a Zip file.
I reckon Analog Obsession has really nailed the look of the interface as it’s simple, clean and easy to grasp at a glance.
The only interface improvement I could see is perhaps to mark the current position of the dial more clearly, as presently, it’s only marked with a tiny little grey dot that almost blends into the dial color.
DrGate is completely free, but if you like what Analog Obsession is doing, then you can head over to the developer’s Patreon to show your support via the Tier system.

onTried to use DrGate in Presonus Studio One 6 on Windows 11, but I received an error that DrGate was deactivated because it “produced invalid data”. Thanks anyway.

onYou should let the dev know, right on the Patreon post from the link is a great spot for that. Hard to fix bugs nobody mentions are a problem.
