Rare ⁄ DSP has released Drumclone as a free beta release for macOS and Windows in VST3 format.
The dev describes the plugin as a percussive signal extraction and resynthesis software for drum sound design and music production.
Drumclone, as the name suggests, can extract and modify kick sounds from audio sources like songs, samples or other recordings with percussive elements.
The beta offers a single model tuned for kick modeling.
You can use it for other drum sounds, but doing so requires some manual adjustment.
Drumclone models can isolate and resynthesize drum sounds.
The plugin achieves a fast workflow through sub-second processing times and a drag-and-drop interface.
It is also set up for sound design applications.
Drumclone can imitate one-shot percussion sounds and edit their transient, attack, and noise components down the sample level.
The plugin is made to help create high-quality drum samples and edit them for use in productions, all within a fast and flexible workflow.
The Drumclone resynthesis process is specially designed to capture and maintain the original timbre and quality of the sample.
Rare ⁄ DSP hosts 14 examples of the plugin in action on the product page.
Each of these 14 examples demonstrates the original source track briefly and then shows multiple Drumclone reproductions of the sound, with slight variations on each one.
I think this is a great way to show what the plugin can do and demonstrate the sounds you can pull from it, which would be very usable in productions.
The cloned kicks come out very clean, and I can see how handy it would be to have this plugin in your toolkit when working on hip-hop, electronic music, and other styles based on samples.
What bedroom producer doesn’t want a clean copy of John Bonham’s kick drum?
Rare ⁄ DSP has outlined the exact process for how to use the plugin on the product page, which is a handy little guide for those starting out.
There doesn’t seem to be an official YouTube demo of the plugin available, but there are a number of user demos on YouTube out already.
These demos are a good way to get a feel for the workflow of the plugin in practice.
You can download Zip files for the macOS and Windows versions with one click from the top of the product page, and there are instructions for the simple install process at the bottom of the page.

onThanks Stephen, BPB & Rare DSP
I find DrumClone much easier to use if i edit my audio first, then add a short loop or something into the GUI – and then try to select the part i want to extract.
A great idea, i’m still experimenting with it

onWill this plugin stay free forever? Or will it one day switch to paying?

onAs far as i know, the plugin uses “models” which you can download & install in the future as they become available.
From Rare DSP website…
*Future models might require a paid license to support their development and maintainance. (e.g. a one-time purchase)”
