HoRNet Audio is back with another freebie just in time for Christmas – the HoRNet MixComp, a free analog-style compressor for macOS and Windows.
HoRNet Audio has a habit of timing its festive events; around this time last year, the generous developer gave us the TreBand Classic EQ Plugin for free.
We also had a limited-time opportunity to grab Hornet DynEq and Hornet Chorus 60 free a few months ago, so I hope some of you picked those up.
If you missed out on Chorus 60, you can check out our best free chorus VST plugins article.
This year, we’ve got Hornet MixComp, a plugin inspired by legendary analog hardware.
MixComp is a beginner-friendly plugin that delivers professional results.
The intuitive interface is fully resizable and has various themes (light/dark, etc.) to blend with your workflow.
In addition to producing some of the sound, character, and behavior of vintage analog gear, Hornet MixComp has modern features that ensure the best possible performance.
One of the key features is Hornet’s Smart Oversampling, which improves the audio quality while keeping the CPU performance in check.
Another key feature is the Analog Saturation Mode which adds subtle harmonic distortion to recreate the classic warm and rich sound you’d expect from vintage analog hardware.
It’s easy to control dynamics with adjustable Threshold, Ratio, Release, and Fast Attack settings.
Hornet MixComp is an easy-to-use compressor capable of polished results or adding some real punch.
To download Hornet MixComp, just create a free account at Hornet Plugins if you don’t already have one. Once you create an account, you’ll have to download the HoRNet DoIn plugin manager to install MixComp.
If vintage compressors pique your interest, we’ve had a few this year, like the Teletronix-inspired Lotus Sound Audio’s LA2-FOX.
If you want something a little less traditional, check out Dynastia and Dynastor from Outobugi, an OTT clone, and its single-band little brother.
Hornet MixComp is available in 64-bit AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
As always, thanks for reading, and I hope everyone is safe and well over the holidays; cheers!

onI’ve noticed that most of the BPB writers don’t actually know anything about the plugins and companies they write about. They’re just in it for the money. To be honest, I even question if they’re actually musicians.
Chris
onyeah all that “blog post” money, so selfish of them.
KL
onRespectfully if you feel this way, there are other sites. They are letting us know theses free plugins exist and let us decide if we want try it. It’s hurtful to make baseless accusations.
Best wishes
ER
onMerry Christmas to everyone instead criticizing. Best wishes in these times.
Lucas
onThank you, dgu, for alerting us to these shady BPB frauds. Chris is right, I got pics of BPB staff throwing one of their lavish parties, swimming in cash at their blog-post mansion. XD

onYou’re joking, right? YOU obviously have no experience with this site and, thus no right to be so offensive to Tomislav and his dedicated staff. Find some meaning in your life instead of making baseless comments.
Moon Doggy
onWho cares? They keep us updated on most of the newest free and discounted music software, right?
Right.
Bpb is an invaluable resource. What these individuals do in their spare time means no more to me than how many times a rat typically mates in a day.
Far too many people go out of their way just to find something to whinge about then immediately jump online to share their misery with the rest of the world.
It’s exhausting.
Once you get a life and find some joy in the world the beautiful blue sky will look so much more blue and so much more beautiful.
Give it a try.

onGod, I gave my two cents, and it created chaos. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t use bpb as my main resource because they don’t keep up with most new plugins. I got the Hornet plugins almost two days ago.
However, I come here because I’ve been visiting this website since 2010. And as a very long-time member, I feel like bpb has been degraded. Tomislav Zlatic is doing wonderful work. All of his posts are flawless. He truly delves into the plugins and their intricacies.
Now, the other writers seem clueless. They are constantly called out in the comments by other users and even companies. They make numerous mistakes in their posts.
Stop being brown-nosed; speaking up against something doesn’t mean you hate it; it means you care enough to want to see it improve.
Tomislav Zlatic
onNo worries, feedback is always welcome, positive or negative.
We are a small team, we sometimes make mistakes. My posts aren’t flawless, either. For one, English isn’t my first language, so my sentences are often far from perfect.
Now, clueless… I can’t agree with that. Everyone on the current BPB team (James, Steve, Soroosh, and me) is passionate about music production and software and is doing their best to maintain BPB’s reputation as one of the best resources for music producers.
My big project for this year was to refresh the design from the ground up (super happy with how that turned out), improve website speed as much as possible, and refresh most of the free VST articles (more updates are coming). We also released the free BPB Bassaturator plugin, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Again, we are not flawless. I sometimes have less time for BPB than before (I became a parent in the meantime, so I sometimes need a short break from blogging to keep my sanity and avoid complete burnout). That said, rest assured that we are doing our best and that BPB will become even better in 2025.
To you and everyone else in the comments section – THANK YOU for your continued support. BPB is here to stay and will keep improving next year.
Thank you for reading BPB. ❤️

onWhy are in every posts cross-references and links to other posts, even if they do not have anything to do with the current subject? Is this for SEO?
Tomislav Zlatic
onIt’s to help readers discover more interesting plugins.

Gracias BPB. Adelante.

Sorry, but this is quite rude, isn’t it? I am very thankful for the information I can get here and for the free plugins. I doubt that any of the BPB Editor / Writer is making the big buck from writing here. What I think this is a shame, because they deserve not only respect and gratitude for their free work since keeping such a website up to date with relevant and current information is a very time consuming thing. I highly respect that, and I am very thankful for the resources and information I can get here for free.
Thanks BPB!

onI agree Mark.
I’m tired of the individuals who visit Bpb on a regular basis yet complain about them in the comment section.
If it’s so bad here then why do these people keep coming to the site? It seems like they’re unhappy themselves so they want to take their unhappiness out on Bpb and anyone that reads the comments.
Yes, thanks Bpb. There are readers who do appreciate what you do.
Tomislav Zlatic
onThank you for your support, Mark! Means a lot.

onI have many HorNet vsts and alot of them were free. Such a generous developer with many good plug ins.
Origin Makers
onBPB is my one stop solution for all the plugin needs. I’ve been following them for over 6 years and the level of consistency in their work is amazing. I’ve good collection of free and cheap VST plugins I’ve collected over the years referring BPB and right now it feels like I have all the resources to do quality music. Moreover BPB itself have released a few high quality VSTs for free which I do use.
And I did all this without paying a penny to BPB. I hope the same holds for most of the Bedroom Producers using BPB. Let us take a moment to appreciate these folks.
Thanks Tomi and team. You people have been great. Merry Christmas to you all.
Tomislav Zlatic
onThank you so much, OM! Merry Christmas to you, too!
