Emotive Brass is the latest addition to the free Origins Series from Sonixinema.
Sonixinema’s Origins Series has been nothing short of exceptional so far; the free series, including Delicate Strings and Whispering Woodwinds, is a must for anyone interested in media scoring.
Brass is often a tricky section for developers because it’s a very unforgiving sound. You can’t hide virtual brass as convincingly as you can with string sections/sounds, so if the sound isn’t incredible, it stands out like a sore thumb.
Like the other Origin Series releases, Emotive Brass focuses on movement to inject emotion and interest into the simplest chords.

The library features a six-piece chamber brass section playing two-bar swells, the exact sound you get from the premium Brass Swells Pro library with fewer features.
Emotive Brass gives you one core sound with five additional presets that feature various effects, dynamics, and mic position settings.
One of the nicest features of Emotive Brass is the legato function when changing notes. If you change a note of a chord at any time, the new note will join the swell at the same point as the rest to allow the crescendo to continue its momentum.
The sound of the core patch is lovely; it’s warm and gives that wholesome feeling you get from brass when a sound tells you that everything is OK (or that there is still hope, at least).
The additional presets are:
- Amber Glow
- Echolect (Gater)
- Logogram (Gater)
- Neuralinear
- Timecipher
The Timecipher preset is lovely; it’s more modern with overlapping textures but doesn’t lose the defining brass sound.
Presets using the built-in gater are even more modern and take on an entirely new personality.
Emotive Brass has the standard Origins interface, which means we can customize the gater to create unique textural sounds.
We also have the same expression controls, mic positions, and effects from the previous releases.
The interface is great; you get enough simple controls to perform with maximum expression and dynamics, and the extra effects and gater open up new possibilities that you typically wouldn’t consider using brass sounds for.
As before, the Degrade effect is very cool if you want to rough up tradition a little.
Emotive Brass works with the free Kontakt 8 Player.
