Xunil-Cloud has released CloudReverb, a free algorithmic reverb plugin based on the open-source CloudSeed reverb engine by Valdemar Erlingsson.
CloudReverb offers a deep and flexible reverb architecture inspired by classic 80s digital reverb units. It’s a complete rewrite of the original CloudSeed plugin using JUCE, which brings native support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
This rewrite also features a brand-new user interface that’s compact and much easier to navigate than the original.
At the core of CloudReverb is a multi-stage architecture that includes early and late diffusion stages, multitap and late delay lines, and a set of modulated allpass filters. The result is a reverb that can go from tight ambience to lush, cinematic washes with plenty of depth and stereo movement.
You have complete control over each stage. The early reflections section features a multitap delay and a series of modulated allpass filters, while the late stage offers up to 12 parallel delay lines, each processed with feedback filters, modulation, and optional diffusion.
Each delay stage can be individually modulated, giving you access to subtle shimmer or chaotic clouds of decay depending on your settings.
One of my favorite parts is how much control you have over modulation and randomness. You can adjust seed values for diffusion, delay, and tap placement, or use the cross-seed feature to add stereo width by offsetting the randomness between channels.
Another standout feature is the Shelf EQ, which lets you shape the reverb tail with high and low shelf filters and an additional low-pass filter. There’s also a clear routing diagram built right into the UI, which helps a lot when understanding how each module connects.
The GUI is intuitive and fully resizable, and the plugin layout mirrors the signal flow, making it easier to get great results fast. For a completely free plugin, this is one of the most advanced algorithmic reverbs available right now.
CloudReverb is available in VST3 and LV2 formats for Windows and Linux. macOS users can try building from source, but there’s no official support yet. You can grab the current version (v0.3) for free from the developer’s GitHub and start experimenting with some truly massive reverb textures.
